20ish year old central unit and 15-20 year old digital thermostat. A week or so ago the thermostat started showing "System On" but neither outside or inside units running. Turned the thermostat off, waited about 30 minutes, and turned it back on, and came on fine. Ran as normal for a couple of days.

Now it has begun doing this every time it calls for air. Turn it off, wait half an hour or so, and turn it back on, and usually it comes on, but sometimes takes more than one attempt.

Any ideas? Regular AC guy out of town till Monday, of course.

How about starting with the least costly?

Not an expert, but I would start with the thermostat or thermostat wiring.

I've had a bad thermostat do similar. It's a quick and relatively cheap procedure to try yourself before having to call a heat/air guy.

Could be a bad thermostat.

Also had a unit with similar symptoms where the control board went bad via cracks in the solder joints on the board. Sometimes it would work fine, sometimes not. Diagnosed by wiggling the wiring harness and was able to get the outside unit to cycle when the board made contact via moving the wiring harness. Do not fool around inside an energized unit unless you are competent.

Good luck.

I agree with the others...sounds like a faulty thermostat. if you don't want to wait for your ac guy, anyone who is somewhat handy can install a replacement, since the wires should all be there.

Thanks everyone. I'll start with the thermostat, I think I can handle that on my own.

You're dropping the 24 volt control voltage somewhere. The transformer could be failing. The thermostat could be failing. If there's a control board on the air handler/furnace, it could be failing. Whatever it is, it's dropping the voltage. If your setting on your thermostat calls for air, it will show "system on" even if the system isn't running. It doesn't know the 24 volts isn't "making" somewhere. Cross your fingers it's the stat or transformer. Inexpensive fixes.

Get a decent stat...programmable! And set the program to operate. The stat, when set properly, will save you a ton of cash in electricty.

Is that a programable thermostat? Or just manual digital?

If you decide to change the thermostat yourself, make sure you turn the power to your inside unit off. Then take pictures of the wiring before you disconnect. Get some 3/4 inch Sheetrock screws to mount on wall. They make a tighter connection.

just make clear notes (and pictures) of where every wire is attached on the existing thermostat. I have seen some HVAC folks mix up wire colors on more than one occasion....then when you connect to your new thermostat per the directions, it screws things up.

If it is an old programmable thermostat, some of them were 7 day programs or just every 24 hour programs. Could be stuck in some program and just don't realize it.
