I have a friend who just turned 30 that has claimed false college tuition/academic expenditures every year for almost a decade and recieves a nice annual return
Idk if they would audit someone for less than 2-3 grand but I think he's tempting fate at 30

I know someone well who hasn't filed a tax return in about 18 years. Has a business and cashes the checks at a liquor store. Pays illegal immigrant employees cash wages. Goes to casinos often. It's a real shitshow.

Bills about to come due though - soon to retire with no savings and no social security. Oops.

i worked at a bank as a teller during college. The worst about not paying taxes were the grass cutting folks. they would come in every week with a stack of 30-50 checks made to "cash" and cash them all. They bragged about not paying taxes. Because they were customers, i had to be very passive aggressive about how i let them know i hated them.

Why would you report them when the IRS already knows. Its not like they are going to bump them to the top of the list.

Tens of millions of people don't file each year and the IRS only has so many agents

OK - So they just decide to not file taxes and just keep receiving letters or something from the IRS?

I'm assuming these are people that are receiving money under the table as previously mentioned? B/c I look forward to filing my taxes so I can get a little money back.

Eh great for the agents. I have better things to do than go snooping through someone's finances and take the blood money after I turn them in.

I'm a CPA, and get a ton of referrals from a couple of law firms in town. It happens much more than you'd think.
