OT Dr's/Nurses question about blood clots

My mom just got out of the hospital last week. She had a huge red mark on her arm from the IV. She is at a follow up dr appt visit now and they tell her she has a blood clot in her arm from the IV. She is waiting to do an ultra sound. I know blood clots are never good, so what can I expect from this? TIA

Superficial thrombophlebitis. The treatment is usually anti-inflammatory medicine or blood thinners, but can usually clear up on its own.

Thanks, just seems like they should have caught this before she was discharged. We should them her arm and they just told her to put a hot compress on it.

Hmm, that must have been one of those nurse practitioners we have heard so much about recently.

Probably best to send pics of either mom or nurse just so I can make a full diagnosis.

Sadly, IV's are left in way too long. They are supposed to moved to a different location every couple of days. Patients that are difficult sticks will keep theirs longer and usually become infiltrated. That's why you see all the bruising on peoples arm when they are released from the hospital. Older people on blood thinners look horrible after a hospital stay for this reason.
I'm a CRNA, and I bet half of the people that we do surgery on that come from the floors have infiltrated IV's

Superficial thrombus doesnt matter.
Shouldnt be on anticoagulation for that.

Ask a NP. they are as good as a MD.

For as much shite as doctors get on this board, there sure are a lot of medical threads popping up lately.

Hot compress for that is contraindicated.
