I wouldn't recommend getting a pinch collar unless you're having pulling problems. I doubt that's a concern with a Boston terrier as it is with larger terriers. But it's something to consider if the issue arises.
Definitely don't tether it in the backyard. Tethers stress out a dog badly. It's why I see a lot of aggressive behavior from dogs tethered in their backyard. Just fix any holes in the fence. A Boston isn't going to climb our jump it like other breeds. If they're compulsively digging, they're stressed or bored. Fix the problem with the dog instead of making it easier for you too do with. Problems like that can show themselves in unexpected ways.
