"The Orlando Sentinel is discontinuing the posting of arrest mugshot galleries effective today," began the three-paragraph post on their site. "We’ve come to realize that without context, the galleries have little journalistic value and may have reinforced negative stereotypes."

Just gonna leave this one out there.

It's interesting how statistics are now stereotypes. It's like they don't understand how stereotypes come about.

Are they saying they expect mostly black folks to be arrested?

Isn’t that incredibly racist?

If they wanted to do this in a way that actually met the outcome they desired they should have just done it and not told anyone. Now they look like idiots with their explanation

I will say I think posting mugshots en masse without context or a backstory for each is a fricking abhorrent practice.

Quite a few of those people were found innocent in court, had charges dropped, etc., but their mugshot being in the paper ruined their lives or made their lives very hard.

Are they going to stop publishing stats and photos from NBA games, too?
Because there is a stereotype that most players are African American

A lot of innocent people are arrested unfortunately. You think they deserve their mugshots in the paper so the whole community can jump to conclusions about them without any story or context or before they're convicted in court?

What on earth would that stereotype be?

That oysters in the ocean are salty? Because they are oysters, and in the ocean?

Legit response. Didn't think of it like that.

They have not been convicted of anything. Plenty of people are arrested and never convicted. Publishing mugshots goes against innocent until proven guilty.
