On this day in 1815, British and American troops fight one of the largest battles of the War of 1812 at New Orleans. Neither army realizes that the two governments have already signed a peace treaty and the conflict has officially been over since Christmas Eve.

A few months earlier the British tried to stop the electoral college vote at the Capitol and that happened two days ago

I'm just not so sure about them using an alligator as a cannon.

The battle lasted 25 mins. I imagine the artillery did the most damage. Not the squirrel guns. But still a legendary story. 5300 trained soldiers vs a group that had to yell orders in English French Spanish and Choctaw.

Mark Carlton's take in HIST 2071 many years ago was that the artillery won the battle, there was an artillery duel a day or so before that the US won...

Wasn't it mainly because we had Jean Lafitte, the pirate, on our side using his well trained men firing the cannons?

They ran through the briers and they ran through the brambles. And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go

They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em

On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Lafitte wasn't on the line, Dominique You and Renato Beluche were at the Number 3 battery...

William Faulkner had a line about Southern boys wanting to be with the Army of Northern Virginia just before Picketts Charge...bullshite, I'm 7th generation NOLA with an ancestor who was a Confederate infantryman...if you're from the NOLA area and have any idea of history, you want to be with Jackson's army the morning of January 8, 1815...

my personal preference is to be with Number 3 battery that early morning and drink some coffee with Andrew Jackson and Dominique You!!!

Like a 90% chance Jackson would challenge you to a duel.

That's a hard man.

Thanks, I had to listen to the song again. Now it'll be stuck in my head the rest of the day.

I just finished Patriotic Fire: Andrew Jackson and Jean Lafitte at the Battle of New Orleans by Winston Groom (author of Forest Gump) for the second time. Pretty good book if anyone is interested in the battle
