On the private money vs. public money question....

Of the "big money donors" who put together the $20 million to buy Les out... Who are these folks? Do any of them contribute to the academic side of the university? I'm sure some of them do.
But are most of them non-alumni? Are they people who just want access to the program, low TAF numbers, good club seats, etc? I'm not judging their motives, because God knows they can do whatever they want with their money. And everybody loves football.
But why is nobody outraged that LSU can't raise $15 million to renovate a crumbling academic building? Why do we have 80 year old historic buildings next to the quad with roofs that leak like a sieve, but they can't raise money to fix it because "art programs are a waste of money"?
Some of the posters screaming about Alexander nixing the buyout are the same ones who argue that LSU should cut wasteful spending.

People donate money to athletics, not worthless academic departments. Deal with it.
LSU athletics are essentially an independent business.

People are free to donate their money as they wish
Athletics, engineering, business, law st LSU happen to have some very wealthy supporters. Liberal arts do not.

I love me some LSU athletics but I agree we should be a university first and an NFL minor league franchise second.

Most of the people that are the die hard LSU football fans aren't too concerned with the academic side of the university.
They wouldn't care if LSU went completely online as long as the football team stayed intact.

You donate your $15million to what you want and quit bitching about what others do with their money.

TAF has $100+ million in liquid assets they have already accumulated over the years. No one was going to call up private donors and fundraise this money separately. It would have come from this fund.

Nobody disagrees with that. If LSU was trying to take general funds to make a coaching change I would be 100% against that.
But that's not what happened. At all. LSU is one of only 3 or 4 ADs in the entire country that takes no public funds or student fees. Where is the outrage over what ULL, La Tech, ULM, etc are paying their coaches? THAT should be where the outcry should focus on. LSU athletics cuts a fat check to the academic side every year!

And for the OP, the LSU foundation has raised a LOT of money for the academic side over the years

One of them made a ton of money installing satellite TV systems when that industry was just getting off the ground. He never graduated LSU, or any other college. I seriously doubt he contributes any money to the academic side, but will admit I'm wrong if proven otherwise.

I don't get mad at anyone for donating money. Better that they put their money where their mouth is than stupid fricking hash tag campaigns that don't solve shite.

Someone posted the other day that the athletic department should have veto power over University decisions. I don't think they were being sarcastic...

define "wasteful". I can assure you, your definition is not the same as the donors. And since its their money, they decide what is wasteful and what is not.
BTW, when are you making your donation?

So let's say you have two kids .. Sixteen year old twins ... You and your wife have taken pay cuts at work and are struggling ... Can't even put food in the table some nights and are about to get kicked out of your house ... One twin goes out and raises 100,000 and wants to go out and buy a brand new Porsche.
Would you allow your kid to do that? While the rest of the family just looks on struggling??

gee Slippy, seems the academic side can find ways to piss away money too huh? Will the Lazy River give $7.5MM back to the university every year?
Didn't think so. But the athletic department does apparently so...
