LSUNURSE- do you only do floor nursing? Ever thought about leaving the floor to be a CDI specialist?

FIFY. Ochsner is a national top tier hospital. It is on level with any hospital in Houston with the exception of cancer care at MD Anderson

Fwiw....I take it as a huge complement whenever a family of a patient I've been caring for a few nights in a row looks genuinely happy to see me when I come in to work to care for their child. I know I've gained their trust when a parent decides to go home and get a night of rest while I'm caring for their child overnight(this is in regards to patients that have been there for a long period of time....it's obviously physically and emotionally draining on parents and we always encourage them to make sure and take time for themselves whether that is a night sleeping in their own bed, a few hours to go eat outside the hospital, whatever).

but that doesn't mean that I won't ask a bunch of question and be at the bedside when a loved one is in the hospital
I would be doing the same and making sure they knew I was also a nurse. Keep em on their toes

That's all I've done the past 14 years....acute pediatric floors mostly.

What is that? I'm about to be 100% vested at my job's pension plan in 2 years so I really don't plan on leaving there if I can. However....if layoffs happen then I would consider stepping away from bedside nursing to try something different...esp after I get my BSN.

And they have a dumbass cardiologist there that put the wrong stent in my artery.

CDI specialist seems like it would be very boring. I may be wrong, but I love pt care not scrutinizing charts. Isn't that what it entails?
Posted on 6/2/15 at 9:08 pm to lsunurse
A CDI specialist is a non-floor nurse that helps docs improve their documentation. You and I know what they mean but they may never put acute/chronic, mild/moderate/severe malnutrition, or some of the other things to show how acute their patients really are.
A colleague of mine lives in PHX area. Was just curious if you had explored that route.

The lack of care, mistreatment, disrespect, and failure to monitor during my mom's emergency care, or rather lack of it there killed her. They killed my mom in that hospital. I'll never step foot in that building again, and wouldn't care if the thing collapsed upon itself. The floor that is suppose to be extended ER, I want to say it's the 5th, but I'm not sure, but those who work that floor remind me of people who weren't smart enough to work as a cashier at Walmart, and the sorry excuse of a doctor on that floor, well she's an absolute joke. No doctor at that hospital ever examined my mom while she was there. They were only in the room to ask us the same redundant stupid questions. But during the 10 hours she was there, no doctor ever touched, or even looked at her. I can tell you the things that happened that day that you wouldn't think could happen at a hospital in this city.frick OLOL.

I do as well. But lately I've def been feeling nursing burnout. Frustration with hospital administrators over tight staffing all the time. Frustration with seeing the same messed up social situations at work. Frustration in general.
One of my coworkers just got a job working for United Healthcare for some nursing phone job. M-F 8 hour gig with no weekends/holidays. After 9 months can even work from home. Great pay and great benefits. Gotta say it sounds really tempting to someone facing burnout.

Fwiw, that's similar to the level of care my mom got at Ocshner. Actually Ocshner couldn't figure out how to even schedule her to see a doctor or get her medical records and were totally unconcerned about the golf ball sized tumor on her neck. Thank god for MD Anderson.

once OLOL took over for the Earl, it was bound to go downhill. I would head out to Ochsner if in BRa

Gotcha....they call it something else(forget exactly what) at my work. But yeah, couple nurses on my floor left to do that and they like it. They basically make sure doctors are charting what they need to do so that insurance will cover the stay or make sure if the stays are gonna be covered (ex; diagnosis of pneumonia....that pt better have antibiotics ordered, etc).

I work in an Oncology clinic (kaiser) and we are feeling it, but I really feel badly for the hospital nurses---you guys are really feeling the pinch from Obamacare (increase pts and not an increase in staff). We have had a few of the hospital nurses come to the clinic in the last yr because they were getting burned out and also concerned for their licenses. Good luck to you

Yep that is the consulting space I am in. I work with nurses who help get that shite right. Unknowingly, MDs leave a lot on the table. The cool part about my job is traveling and getting to help a more expansive network of patients.

Years ago I needed major surgery and I wanted to come home to be with my family.
The surgeon down here referred me back to my surgeon in California.
He told me he did not trust the staff at OLOL due to the large scale surgery I needed.
I don't know if the dr had an issue with OLOL or he was right.

Bobby Jindal shut down EKL. Bobby Jindal shut down BRG Mid City ER.
Did anyone expect a different outcome at OLOL?

Worst I've ever seen was Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens, NY. My grandfather in 2013 was sick there and what a fricking nightmare. Thankfully never been to any hospital in BR.

A hospital, like a school, movie theater or mall s reflective of its clientele, not necessarily its employees. The Lake lives off of Medicare and Medicade patients.
