Old Louisiana Legend/prank/excuse to tromp through the woods drunk

The Bopotumus.
I was reading a book of Smiley Anders bests and came across this. It apparently lives in the hills of south Acadiana, the hide is worthless, the meat is terrible, and no one has ever caught one...so we think it looks like bigfoot only much smaller. There are tours and hunts for a price.

let me quote Smiley:
"Murphy Dreher, the mayor of Star Hill, has received a noteworthy honor, and I'm pleased to be able to break the news.
F.P Hunter, president of the North American Safari Club, has named Murphy to guide its upcoming bopotmus hunt this fall.
The bopotamus is a short-legged, near-sighted mammal that inhabits hilly parts of West Feliciana.
It is realted to the nauga, but unlike that creature, its hide is not commercially usable.
I hope I'm invited to the hunt -- it sounds like the sporting event of the year."

West Feliciana, and south Acadiana are only 100 miles apart, and yet a world. Also it didn't say a small bigfoot. Otherwise, I still wish I was there for this one.

There is a second entry in this book.
About bopotami: Dear Smiley: In referece to the "Bopotamus Hunt:"
We are afraid that most people do not understand about a bopotamus hunt. There needs to be some clarification on the subject.
I know there are a few unanswered questions in our minds.
1. Where do you locate bopotomuses or bopotomi?
2. Do you attempt to capture one alive or do you kill them?
3. What tracking methods are used?
4. Is there a license required and what is the bag limit?
5. Finally, what do you do with a bopotamus when and if you bag one.
Chris, Connie, and Ticker -Baton Rouge.
Dear Folks: I took your questions to Festus P Hunter of the North American Safari Club, and here are the answers:
1. Bopotomi (the coreect plural) inhabit hilly areas of West Feliciana Parish. They are short-legged, nearsighted mammals, kin to the nauga.
2. Bopotami hunters are divided on whether they should be taken alive or killed. Since none have ever been spotted, the question remains moot.
3. Bopotami are said to be attracted to Jack Daniels, which I'm told is a sour-mash whiskey made in Tennessee. On hunt days, you can observe hunters carrying Jack Daniels bottles as they stalk the elusive creatures.
4. Hunting licenses issued by the Free State of Star Hill are required, and the bag limit is one bopotomus during the three-day season, which coincides with Labor Day weekend.
5. Good question. Bopotomus hide is worthless, the meat is inedible and their cantankerous disposition rules out any chance of making pets of them. However, some hunters say they would make excellent gifts for mothers-in-law.
Smiley Anders y'all. Folk hero. Advocate Legend. Lucky bastard. Lovably lame hack.

I've never heard of this one.
Hanging out in the woods drunk is a great time though.
Coon hunting > other hunting

Smiley is like the autistic kid nobody has the heart to fire
Kinda like a younger Andy Rooney with less rants about new fruits or vending machines

It was more an excuse to have a big party/festival than to actually find a mythical creature

Isn't there a new reality show starting up soon based on this? Legends or monsters from the swamps is the premise I think.
