Plane was hijacked and brought to an old remote Russian airfield being leased from Kazakhstan. Plane was hid and then moved, the base was demolished.

The article touches on that a little bit. the Russians/hijackers may have wanted something from one of the passengers or something the plane was carrying.

There are much easier ways to do both than hijacking a whole plane and making it disappear.
