damnit man. This looks like communist socialist policy to me.

Illegal in NYC, but not here in the Ozarks. I'd have loved to have bid on a semi-truck load of those and at least sold them on craigslist or something.

I've got a ton of friends that could've used the parts or snapped up a cheap bike.

LINK

I mean really why wouldn't they have just sold them off to the public provided they went to areas that allowed them? Silly stupid government.

How stupid. That's a lot of money they just wasted.

Then again, say they take them off to auction and some idiot buys one and ends up killing himself, guess who's getting sued?

They could have made a nice chunk of change selling them off to a foreign country.

I'm sure they will get some money from scrap

You want them to sell illegal bikes back out onto the street where they just got them from?

Id like to know where that scrap went. All the scrap from "cash for clunkers" went to China.

Why would they get sued for someone getting killed? Plenty of cities sell off old equipment like this. Do you think NOLA gets sued if they sell a piece of equipment like a old car or tractor and the new user gets killed using it?

I think you replied to the wrong person. My question to the guy who suggested this, was WHY would they sell ILLEGAL bikes back out onto the streets?

They're illegal in NCY. They could take them out of state to auction them off. But they'd still have the matter of liability to deal with.

Lolno

I buy stuff at auctions from the state and local parishes fairly often and they always have ATVs, boats, motorcycles etc. Stuff that could be considered "dangerous" and there's no fear of them being sued. There's a shite load of disclosures and as is clauses on your bid card and announced at the start of the auction. It's buyer beware and full responsibility is on the buyer not the seller.

I bought a truck for one of my workers at an auction 2 weeks ago and by your account if he gets in a wreck he'll be able to sue the parish that sold it? If that was the case no one would ever sell used motor vehicles.

Because they're "unsafe" vehicles. The government use to auction off old jeeps for next to nothing but later stopped after a number of people wrecked them.

You can sue for anything but in this case the suit would get tossed out. There's a shite load of disclosures you agree to once you bid on something. The state of LA holds an auction the first weekend of every month and they often have ATVs in it from police and wildlife departments. They wouldn't do that if there was a fear of being sued.

They sell stuff more dangerous than jut ATVs too.

I had no idea just SPECULATING that liability issues might be one reason NYC trashed those bikes and ATV's would turn into people wanting to argue.

I don't know what they're thinking in NYC, I even said it was stupid in my first statement in this thread. I just guess liability could be a concern because I remember decades ago when the govt stopped auctioning off old surplus jeeps in running condition.

That's funny because you can go to the GSA website and still find used postal jeeps for sale from time to time when they are changing out their fleet.

Or you can buy them from the gov liquidation auctions along with other stuff that could be considered "unsafe".

How are they doing it? Are they just loco? Don't they know they could be sued at any minute? Maybe you should notify them!

Like I said, you can still buy them if you know where to go. I see people with old postal jeeps from time to time and I saw some at a local auction just 6 months ago. It's not hard to recognize them because the steering wheel is on the wrong side.

You can also check this site for them from local Parishes and Counties throughout the US.

I'm not talking old postal keeps. I'm talking about the old open top WWII-Vietnam era military jeep.

He's talking out his arse; the seller just has the buyer sign a Release of Liability and Notice of Transfer upon purchase. Done deal.
