It's just high land in the city, much higher than the other side of the river.

The bluff is at the bank on the east side. The dropoff. In Natchez, there are high and low erratic terrains from smaller rivers carving the sediment away.

Sounds like Natchez is a geologically diverse place. Austin, TX is the most ecologically/geologically diverse place I've ever visited.
