North LA Columnist Sam Hanna Jr.: "Grant Flagship Status to LA Tech University"

This seems like a great place to drop this article off before morning errands and let TD chime in on a Friday.

No legislative session would be complete without a little controversy brewing behind the scenes and out of sight of the nosy press. This year is no different.
When the LSU Board of Supervisors tapped William Tate a few weeks ago to become the next president of the university, more than a few lawmakers got a bit peeved with the board’s decision. They got their noses out of joint because more than a few lawmakers had been told Jim Henderson, who currently runs the University of Louisiana System, would get the LSU job. As we all know by now, the LSU board opted to make history by making Tate the first black president of LSU in the history of the Ole War Skule.
So it seems LSU has run into a bit of a problem at the Legislature in securing funding in this year’s budget for a pet project or two on the main campus just down the road from the Capitol. The irony of it all is the LSU people — those that hold high-paying jobs on the campus to do little or nothing — are simply dumbfounded by the Legislature’s refusal to give LSU what it wants and when it wants it.
Perhaps if the LSU board had not hired a man whose entire academic career was focused on peddling the silly narrative that every white SOB on the planet was a racist, lawmakers wouldn’t give LSU the cold shoulder.
There’s something to be learned in this latest episode of LSU proving its worth — or lack thereof — to the state. That is, perhaps the time has arrived for LSU get some competition for a change as it relates to sucking money out of the public till. One way to level the playing the field — so to speak — would be for the Legislature to grant flagship status to La. Tech University.

Apparently that'll happen when pigs fly and Hell freezes over.

I remember this "flagship" thing getting thrown around a lot during the 2011-2013 conference realignment debacle.
I can't imagine it actually means anything. Is there some state that has declared one or more of its universities "flagships?" What does that mean? Does anyone outside of blog / message board dorks care?

I have no rebuttal

Honestly, if that happened at Alabama I would fully support our state cutting all funding. They're already well on their way down that road now.

Agree. But I don’t think they need to go as far as playing stupid games with “flagship” this or “flagship” that. Just keep sending money LSU felt entitled to to either Tech or another instate school. That political middle finger would send the message.

It will never happen but Sam is right in this entire piece. I don’t think the virtue signalers who gave “CRT” Tate the LSU Presidency realize just how big a screw up this is going to turn out to be. When he destroys the school from the ground up good luck getting him fired. It will be nearly impossible due to reasons we all know.

La Tech is in Gods country.
Support.
Outdoor activities for students would rock.

LSU requested the state provide $4M for campus lighting improvements.
Pissed legislators upset over everything happening at LSU and the lack of state control decided to deny adding additional funds. They then mandated LSU use $4M of its normal operating costs appropriations for the project.
Basically legislators are making the statement. If we cannot control what you do on campus we certainly can control how you spend state dollars. And they are doing it in ways that will make LSU administrators uncomfortable. Legislators are trying to make LSU bend the knee to their will. It is a very interesting tug of war rn

LA Tech is bursting at the seams. They need significant dollars to upgrade a multitude of campus systems and facilities. Their new engineering building is awesome.
Congratulations to the Dawgs on their very successful run

The problem lies in the structure of the board of supervisors. It is a place where the governor gets to reward his best political supporters. None of the current board of supervisors has any experience in higher educational leadership. They are all political cronies and people with clout. Often times you get one or two supervisors who basically run the entire show because the others are just figureheads
Louisiana desperately needs to convene a new constitutional convention. Between the terrible structure of their higher education systems and the tax structure, Louisiana is killing itself.
Too many protected state departments, too many special interest projects. Too many wasteful campuses.
Blow it up and start over

Louisiana should split as a State. South La people want nothing to do with the North.
As LSU succumbs to the disease of progressivism, Tech might win a bunch more fans.
