Yes, when I graduated HS, I wanted one meaningful gift, and that was from my parents (who gave me money too). I got only one other non-money gift that I could remember, and it was a law book with a message in it from a teacher I had who was a retired AF colonel. Any other non-monetary gifts weren't memorable.

When I graduated college and especially law school, then having "things" from people I care about became more important. I sold half my earthly possessions during college to buy beer, so there is a reasonable chance any gifts from HS graduation would have met that fate.

In other words, money is correct.

In the rural south they do.

Why don't you just pony up the $50 like everyone else? I mean, if you knew the kid or were close to him - maybe a personalized gift. But, if you don't know? Money.

Couple shares of a stock

I told my nephew I was going to give him 100 shares of Google and 100 shares of Apple but I didn't have any so he got $50 instead.

Maybe he can turn that $50 into the next Google/Apple... but it will probably turn into booze.
