The taxi lobby is significantly stronger in NOLA than any other city I've lived in, which is roughly 5 others.

Seeing these proposed prices just further convinces me of their strength.

New Orleans isn't the first city where Uber has encountered regulatory resistance, and the letter has helped introduce a familiar protest here about the need for regulation weighed against concerns about established industries trying to stifle innovation.

Uber can’t operate in Miami, for example, where existing laws were clearly drafted to protect taxicabs from competition even from other licensed services. Limousines are prohibited from picking up passengers less than an hour after receiving a reservation, for example, and the minimum fare by law is $80. The number of limousine licenses has long been limited to five hundred and fifty.

Indeed, according to Kalanick, the company has spent much of its young life fighting in courts, public utility commissions, and city councils for the ability to offer any service at all. Uber has already fought charges, fines and bans in San Francisco, Chicago, Massachusetts, New York, Washington D.C, and recently in Toronto, where city officials have charged the company with dispatching rides without a license.

In D.C. and San Francisco, however, Uber has successfully fought back, scoring dramatic reversals. Regulatory bans and stiff penalties have transformed into promises to liberalize if not to rethink entirely the rationale behind tightly-regulating paid ride services. The D.C. city council, for example, suddenly reversed an outright ban on the service, creating in December a new class of digitally-dispatched rides.

Emailing "La Toya" and letting her have it. We need Uber BADLY in this area.

I have already emailed LaToya and Susan. I have sent out 5 tweets too. This is fricking bullshite and has my blood boiling. Yeah I'm mad, but how can the city not see this is what we need? It just really makes me feel like the cab companies are filling the back pockets of the council members, and it disgusts me.

I just tried to call Susan Guidry, and she is in Washington right now. The guy on the phone who answered was very nice and asked me to email my complaints because they are getting a huge influx of calls right now since that email came out. It's pretty obvious the city is pisses, and we need to be heard.

Exactly. We really need NOLA residents to get behind this and support Uber to the fullest. When I get back from Brazil, I plan on calling LaToya and Susan everyday of the week. It will take literally 2 minutes out of my day, but there needs to be a constant buzz in the air.

yep

and then hopefully you'll have some type of reform with the taxi commission

and then you'll have uber and lyft and other ridesharing companies competing against each other and basically giving awesome service at a good price

I genuinely believe that drinking and driving could be cut back in this city if we had a reliable, efficient, and accountable taxi service.

This needs to be sold as a public health issue.

A large part of the problem with Uber coming to NOLA is the influence of Malachi Hull. He is the city's taxicab bureau director.

Mr. Hull is a TPOS posing as a politician and his regrettable past actions (related to Uber and in general) are well documented. I am embarassed that he is a fellow alumni of Jesuit HS.

Wait, so for me and three buddies to go from uptown to Poydras for a Saints game would be $35? frick that I'd rather drive drunk and take my chances

$75 from the airport to the city? That is a 10 minute ride unless there is traffic. So now taxi cab drivers are pushing to be paid $200+/hr?

I just emailed both of them...I'll post my email on here. I wrote it fast so no need for anyone to critique my grammar. I wrote in caps quite a few times (like PEEJ) to get my point across to them .

my email

Bring Uber to NOLA!

I can’t believe the corruption our city council is bringing to the table in regards to Uber.

How can you not see Uber is BETTER for the city? I just saw the news about minimum charges for Uber vehicles. Absolutely ridiculous. I love this city with my heart & soul, and at the same time, I am embarrassed to live here sometime. We are the laughing stock of the country in regards to how corrupt we are.

Bring Uber to NOLA! The citizens DEMAND it!
