No replacement for displacement: Engines are about to grow again

For the past several years, automakers have downsized engines in an effort to keep ahead of emissions regulations. Trouble is, regulations keep getting tighter, but engines can get only so small. The answer, it appears, is to take a page from Rita Repulsa and make its monsters grow.
Renault, General Motors and Volkswagen are making moves to either enlarge or remove entirely their smallest motors, Reuters reports. Some of the motors in their smallest vehicles measure less than 1.0 liter of displacement.
Regulations are to blame. As governments move toward on-road testing in lieu of a controlled laboratory environment, the heavier loads associated with these tests show that many of these small motors, most of which are in European cars, emit more pollution than legally allowable. Enlarging motors and tweaking engine tech should remedy that, at least for now.
Downsizing is but one method automakers have employed to stay ahead of emissions targets. To make up for a smaller motor's output, engineers will affix turbochargers or superchargers. Companies can also add expensive and complicated exhaust treatment systems, but that can adversely affect a vehicle's cost and a company's bottom line.
Regulations are to blame

So they're saying the small engines have to work too hard and cause more pollution?

And the EPA is trying to shutdown the weekend racers. fricking sad.

It's still probably the best bang for the buck performance vehicle in its class

Only a matter of time before we have a medium speed diesel in a commuter car
ETA: I'm watinging for the day we have a highway vehicle with a variable frequency diesel electric powerplant, big arse capacitor banks, and 4 independent drive motors. It will be a glorious (and horrendously expensive) piece of machinery

So how fast does a medium speed diesel go?

GM just figured out that you can put a turbo on to add power
How long will it take them to figure out that you can cut some vents in the exhaust to pull clean air in for emissions tests?

I don't like Trump but if the Democrats win the regulations will continue to increase. Just spent two days covering what would be coming and it's overwhelming. The efforts and rule making on climate change will be significant. This is why Al Gore has started to campaign for someone he doesn't like.

Need to tell CARB to frick off

variable frequency diesel electric powerplant
Screw the EPA and the dam liberal greenie dumocrats that created them. Screw algore too.

The new CAFE (Corporate average fuel economy) is moving to 54.5 mpg. This was decreed by the EPA, not Congress. This is the sales weighted average. So they will have to sell 200,000 cars about the size of a SMART or Fiat 500 to sell 200,000 trucks. If they only sell 50,000 tiny POSs then they can't sell more than 50K trucks. And they will probably be hybrids or diesels or both and will cost ma lot more than they do today. So a Mustang or Camaro will have a lot smaller engine and be a lot smaller and lighter. Think a Celica with a small 4 cyl turbo for $65K.
So if you think your vote don't count don't bitch when it happens. It is already law and only the President can change it. One hell of a way to run a Democracy.

Aston Martin had to do the same thing to meet a similar EU standard so they produced this
