My wife's car (2011 Kia Sorrento) is having transmission issues and it's forcing up to look for another vehicle ahead of when we were expecting to buy another car. Because of this, we really haven't saved up enough to buy one of the more reliable brands. We typically try to save up enough to put down a large enough down payment to only have a car note for about 3 three years. So, we are now looking at the Nissan Murano. Up until I purchased the Kia, all I've ever owned were Toyotas and Hondas. I would greatly appreciate it if someone who owns a Murano would share some real world experiences in regarding its reliability.

ETA: One thing I forgot to add is that it's not just the cost of a new transmission, because of the accrued mileage I also have to do other scheduled preventative maintenance like tune up, replacing the timing belt, water pump, etc.

Look into the Hyundai Santa Fe and Subaru Forester. Good lower end SUVs

is your Kia still under the 10yr 100k mile warranty? if so transmission is covered.

I knew a couple people with a Murano. Pre 2014's I believe. They had some issues.

Yes. On a car platform, so very nice ride. Good engine and I think Nissan has finally worked out the bugs in its CVT.

I have a 2017 Murano I've had almost a year. Best SUV I've ever owned.

That Kia still should be running good. If that is really the case, I would never purchase another one. I would go back to the old toyota honda formula.

Used Hondas and Toyotas are very high. From what I've been seeing, I can get a fairly new Nissan that's still under factory warranty for what I would spend on a 35,000-45,000 mile Honda or Toyota.

No, I bought it used and was the second owner so the warranty was only for 5 years/60,000 miles

Murano's are good "SUVs". I had one back in my younger college days. Drove the shite out of it and it didn't have any problems until the very end. Some small issues.

On the older models (09ish), the spark plugs were a bitch to change. Had to drop the engine to get to them.

Why not have the transmission worked on, that's your cheapest option? You can probably get a new transmission or at least fixed for $2000 but $3000 at most. That's much cheaper than a new car. Transmission issues don't mean you need an all new vehicle. If you have under $150k miles on the Kia especially under 100k I'd get a new transmission and drive it longer until you can save for a newer car. I mean $2400 is 6 months of car payments.

My wife had a Murano, very good car. Cvt could be an issue on older vehicles. So again a transmission issue on older vehicles.

Car is only worth about $7000. So, is it really worth it to sink in $2,000 - $3,000 into it? If it wasn't a Kia I would consider it, but I have a strong feeling that if I go that route something else major will happen to it and then I would be in a terrible bind. I can use that money for a new transmission towards a down payment on a new car. I don't mind getting another car if I can pay it off in 3 years.

$2000 for a new transmission.

ETA:

Yes. I replaced a trans on a Mazda CX-7 with 125k Miles on it. No issues so for and I have put 15k more since then. The sticker shock made me repair the trans. 30 G's for a compact SUV? Okay.

We had a 2004 Murano. It was a solid car for about 9 of the 11 years we had it. We had an alternator replaced under a recall. In the last couole years of ownership had to replace an engine mount and had to replace a high pressure power steering line which developed a leak.

We never had any trouble from the CVT. I know some people had problems with Nissan's CVT in the early years. I think it is a mature system at this point.

It was a good vehicle. I didn't really do much other than the above items and changing the oil, tires, and brakes.
