know that it would be $20 to get one and in most other parishes it is $10.

20 bucks is for 2 years; 10 is for one.

Usually that's because some parishes, like EBR, require an emissions test, which is a $20 sticker. I am in Pointe Coupee parish, which doesn't do emissions tests, and it is only $10. With that being said, I can go anywhere and get a sticker as long as I have a LA driver's license, registration, and insurance. I would just have to pay the Parish's price that I am getting the sticker in. I've had them put on in WBR before on my Pointe Coupee registered vehicle.

Your dealership screwed you. I bought a truck at All Star Chevrolet in EBR last year and they put a sticker on it before I drove off the lot.

Was curious so did quick search and found this:

quote:

Individuals with vehicles registered in New Orleans, Kenner or Westwego cannot have their vehicle inspected at a state inspection station. These individuals should contact their city government.

All vehicles registered in the parishes of Ascension, East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Livingston, and West Baton Rouge must be inspected in one of those same five (5) parishes. The cost for an inspection in these five (5) parishes will be: $18.00 (Tax shall not be charged); the cost for an inspection in all other parishes will be: $10.00 (Tax shall not be charged).

Well, I just got a ticket for it. My question--is there really a grace period for this or did that nice, morally inclined young salesman do me dirty?

Just for grins, look at the sales contract and see if they included a $10 or $20 fee for inspection sticker. When I have bought cars in La., they have always had a sticker, and the fee has Always been included in the line items. I have bought more cars in Texas and they have always come with Texas inspection stickers. I've rolled with them, and never gotten a ticket for driving with a Texas brake tag on a car registered in LA. I didn't realize the deal about the parish thing. I will say I live in Caddo Parish and have had my car inspected in Claiborne Parish just because I was over there and realized it was expired, and didn't have any trouble. I like the two year $20 dollar tags.

from a dealership in Tangi parish. Apparently since I registered the vehicle in a different parish (not to be discussed)

So you live in Livingston Parish?

EBR, WBR, Iberville, Ascension, and Livingston Parishes require an inspection sticker with an emissions test, so if you live in any of those 5 parishes you have to get an inspection sticker in any of those 5 parishes.

Kenner residents have to get a City of Kenner inspection sticker. New Orleans residents have to get a City of New Orleans brake tag.

The rest of Louisiana can get inspection stickers anywhere else in the state as far as I know.

From what it sounds like to me, you bought a vehicle in Tangipahoa Parish and you are a Livingston Parish resident. Since Tangipahoa Parish uses regular inspection stickers which would have been worthless and invalid for you living in Livingston Parish, the dealership did not give you one. It is your responsibility when operating a motor vehicle on Livingston Parish roads to make sure you have the proper inspection sticker for it.

do you have to have the inspection performed in the parish you live or can it be a neighboring parish? just curious.

You can get your inspection sticker in any parish, as long as you live outside of the special 5-parish area or you don't live in the City of Kenner, City of New Orleans, or the City of Westwego.

It does NOT have to be a neighboring parish. A resident of St. Bernard Parish could get an inspection sticker in Bossier City with no problem, for example.
