The largest public economic development project in state history has now received the biggest economic development grant in Louisiana history, reports New Orleans City Business.

The Port of New Orleans announced that it has been awarded an additional $226,220,195 million in federal grant funding to support the $1.8 billion Louisiana International Terminal. The facility will be built on 1,100 acres in Violet in St. Bernard Parish to serve vessels of all sizes, increasing Louisiana’s import and export capacity.

Any positive economic news for the state is great news.

I know some baws in da parish aren’t happy but this expansion will be great for the region / state.

We need this.

If they can figure out the route that trucks can take to Paris Road, this will be YUGE for south Louisiana and help us attract more durable goods distribution, rail yards, and even some manufacturing.

the last time I asked about this, the route that was the favorite (but not yet decided upon) was to have a new exit from I-10 and lead through the marsh. Thus, there would be almost no affect on the "locals traffic".

Isn’t the land that the Port of New Orleans sits on part of the wisner family trust?

Now if the city of New Orleans was smart, they’d scuttle the idiotic plans for the six flags site and build something there to support the port.

I believe that is actually what the city wants and the reason they won’t give the bayou Phoenix project any funding right now.

The city wants that to be a terminal for trucks.

totally agree. If this brings in jobs, infastructure imporvements, GDP growth for the region and nation. Totally worth every penny

I live in Arabi so this has very little to do with me, but here's a few things that concern residents:

• Infrastructure: They are estimating over 1,000 18-wheelers per day to be in/out of that terminal. The current infrastructure is not ready for that. That's going to be a shite-ton of wear and tear on sections of roadway that are old and narrow.

• New Exit: There's a proposed new exit from New Orleans East through the marsh to Violet. It's in the proposal with no real cost estimate or tentative project date.

• School: There's an elementary school right across the street from the proposed site.

• Residents: The current plan is to come in via Paris Rd. Then go Judge Perez to Colonial to St. Hwy to the port. These trucks will be running 24/7. The residents are worried about the potential disruption all of that traffic will bring.

Economically, it's a no brainer. The parish stands to make bank on taxes from the Port. And those truck drivers will have to get gas, food, etc., somewhere. The local economy could see a nice boost. But these old cats that have been in da parish since 'Nam are really digging in on this thing. They are planning to fight to the bitter end.

Of course they are. It’s where they live and that’s all legitimate concerns you posted. It’s easy for someone who doesn’t live there to say how great this will be.

There’s obviously room for compromise though. It just seems like the residents of St. Bernard have dug their heels in on this and aren’t willing to listen to any sort of compromise.

This project is going to happen one way or another because financially there’s way too much money at stake. My view is the older parish residents need to figure out what the best path of this project looks like for them and push that angle.

There hasn't been any "compromise" offered in any meeting so far. The new exit was their big olive branch but it's just dangling the carrot. That exit will never get built. Their proposed route would take it right through the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge. The environmentalist are going to lose their shite.

The best path would've been to have the new artery built 2 years ago. That's the only way they'll ever get on board.

It’s going to be a fight. But I’d like to see a judge force them to hold back on it until this proposed new road gets started. Otherwise it’s not going to happen, they are full of shite.

Directly to I-10 and not to Paris road? Is this going to be a toll? That is going to cost a fortune and take years.

And I wouldn't be okay with taxpayer $$ going something so big, expensive, etc. before a new bridge in Lake Charles and Baton Rouge gets funded.

What's wrong with linking to Paris Road?
