New Orleans Vacation

My wife has never been there and really wants to go. I've been there twice but once for for a wedding where the whole everything was planned out for us, the second time was all work no play after Katrina.

If we go in early Summer for a 4 night long weekend thing, what are the do's and dont's?

We're interested in culture, food, you know, all the stuff you'd see on Bordaine or Food Network. We are early 30's and like to have a good time as well. Budget is under a thousand dollars for a 4 night thing, tops.

What do you Cajun people recommend?

My go-to NOLA hotel is the International House.

Most people in NOLA rae not Cajun, lol

International House is nice, nice bar there. Not sure what restaurant if any is attached to it as the last one, Rambla, closed.

If you are a history buff run to the DDay museum and set aside an afternoon for it, great place.

Monteleone is a nice hotel as well

First of all, N.O. is not cajun.

A good time to come may be during French Quarter Fest weekend. Free bands all around the quarter and along the riverfront.

For hotels, the Monteleone is a nice couples place or the Maison Dupruy for a cheaper option.

As far as what to do, there are tons of stuff. Just make it a point of getting out of the quarter some. You don't want to be one of those redneck tourist who goes to Bourbon St. and wants to tell everyone they have "experienced" N.O.

Check back on the food and drink board as your trip gets closer and you can get great suggestions for meals, based on what you like.

Yes... this is good info... thank you. I've done the bourbon street thing, once was enough for me. But My wife will want to go there at least once.

I'd say from the Marigny to Audubon park is the stretch you need to concern yourself with.

I honestly don't see why someone on limited time would go beyond those areas and that is a lot of ground to cover.

Take your wife down Magazine street...there are tons of boutiques and places to shop. She'll enjoy it, for sure.

If you like pork, definitely do Cochon. Its Bourdainish, a little hipster, and a quite touristy but it is an establishment for a reason. The boudin is the best I've ever had. The tongue is also best I've ever had. The best way to enjoy Cochon is by going with another couple or group and split up the smaller dishes. They swap up the menu often and there is usually something not on the menu, so be sure to ask waiter/waitress for chef specials.

Speaking of which, trust the locals. Ask bellhops/hostesses/waiters/waitresses/taxi drivers/etc on different spots to hit.

Took my dad there last year when I was home and we both loved it. Set aside enough time to see the museum and DEF go to the movie they have. Really, really well done and one of those 4d movies where the seats move, things are lowered from the ceiling, it snows in the theater, etc.

Drive a few miles north on Canal street (or ride the street car) and eat Gumbo at Mandinas. Best gumbo ever!

"Audubon Zoo is great"

Agreed. If you like zoos Audubon is definitely one of the better one. Aquarium as well. Last couple of times in we stayed at the Marriott as well as the Residence Inn. Both are easy walking to various things aroung the quarter.

In the french quarter, get a hand grenade and/or a hurricane at Pat O's. Do some flaming dr. peppers at the goldmine then hit the dungeon late night.
