Cancun is now in the midst of the drug war

I would avoid Cancun like the plague now due to the Gulf Cartel and Zetas bringing bloodshed to the area. 2nd mass shooting in less than a week.

It's been in the midst of a drug war. I believe the general in charge of the army was assassinated in Cancun.

It's about to get real over there if this wasn't an isolated shooting and they are actually invading the tourism areas. Loss in tourism money overrides corruption any day

Why even travel to mexico? The nice coastal resort experience it offers can be had in places like california and Costa rica and belize.

My sister had her wedding in puerta vallarta and it was nice, but it's not anything that you can't get in the states or in central america.

A friend of mine spent a week in Mexican prison because they found a bullet in his carry on. Apparently they use situations like his to take advantage of tourists and make money. The lawyer his family hired specialized in cases like his because it's so prevalent.

Edit: he used a backpack he uses when deer hunting and didn't know there was a bullet left in it

It's amazing that only four people were killed with multiple guys throwing around 39mm rounds and grenades

We were there for a week in August. One of the resort guides told us of how there is strong cartel presence and/or influence in Cancun, but there is an understanding among them that tourists in the city are strictly off limits. Basically because of the tourism money and how much they benefit from it. If those "rules" no longer apply, that is quite unsettling and Cancun is truly a no-go.

I thought the cartel tries to keep violence out of tourist areas. Scares off their customers and draws too much attention.
Either way, frick Mexico. Florida or Cali any day

It's frankly just stupid for Americans to travel in those third world shitholes and Mexico in particular. There's no need to go there for a vacation. Even in the best of times, the medical care there is so bad it's not worth going.

Why don't you do the smart thing and go somewhere that's not in the middle of a civil war? Are you just trying to be exotic?

You realize it's not ALL of Mexico right? I've always felt safer in Cabo than The French Quarter by a long shot

I just got back from Cancun. They had us on lockdown in our hotel for a couple of days. There was 2 days of shootings. They turned it into a "red zone" and wouldn't let us out and about until Thurs. I rented a car and drove away from the resorts every day away from where it was happening which was at a resort shooting. Cops, military etc everywhere with oozies and assault rifles. Glad to be home
