It might not make you feel any better, but it's very unlikely you have the actual ashes from your dog.

My Basset was cremated and we put the remains in a Folger Coffee Can like the Big Lebowski

I like my dog more than 99.99999% of people in the world. Hell, he's smarter, more obedient, does his job without complaining, protects the house, cleans up sticks in the yard, supervises me working on things, etc. That's much more than most people do

We lost our Basset three years ago. She was my first dog after I left home. We had her cremated and have her ashes and clay paw print. She was a huge part of our lives from the day we adopted her to the day she passed away. She was there for my wife while my wife was pregnant and I was deployed twice overseas. My boys had a good eight years of her before she died of cancer and they'll always remember her.
The cost wasn't much and I'm glad we decided to go that route. To each his own I guess.

I believe that's primarily why animals were domesticated, to be utilitarian, not so much to be a toenail painted, bandana wearing, spoiled little pussy

he wasn't really fat, he was huge, I'll bet his head weighed 25lbs., his front paws were as big as my fists, maybe bigger, and they were that size as a puppy, also a really long and tall frame, like a big dog!

Unfortunately, the bigger they are the shorter the life cycle. My two Giant Schnauzers are both 85-90 lbs which is a bit on the small size for the breed. The previous ones we had lived to 9 and 12 years. These two are 8 and 6 so I know we probably only have a few years left with the older one. Big dogs give you a great decade but that's about it.

that's about right, he was 8 and 1/2, had trouble for years being temporarily paralyzed, always rallied and got back on his feet(usually when he'd hear me say we need to make a decision about putting him down to the wife

Well, that seems pretty reasonable, but how come it cost so much more to do a person?
Will that pet place accept human remains?
