1) A few different types of cancer tend to run in families... and are thus easily explained and not a surprise.
2) Living / being in certain areas where there are high levels of environmental toxins (industrial or otherwise) or radiation (x-rays, various other portions of the EM spectrum, including sunlight) explains other forms.
3) Poor diet is often a contributing factor that can explain some as well.
4) Black-Eyed Children in your home.

Nope. My American Staffordshire probably kept me from getting robbed when I lived in a sketchy part of Bayou St John. She also helped me meet a lot of chicks at festivals as a pup. She's a shitty guard dog, but a great deterrent to people that have never met her.

Not to veer too far into Da Vinci Code / symbology territory, but I wonder if some critic of these these ruling elite might have been been obliquely identifying them in the context of the triune brain paradigm (reptilian/limbic/neocortex). The reptilian part is supposed to account for aggression and being territorial, so I can see someone symbolically painting them with this to insinuate such people are ruthless and their refined exterior should not be trusted. From there, it may have been easily manipulated as you suggest.

But I really don't know anything about this topic. The above was just a passing thought that your post inspired.
