So, I do art stuff on my spare time and sometimes my sketches will include pop culture elements. Recently, I sketched a charcoal piece of Bill Simmons as the main Wight Walker from Game of Thrones. I tagged Bill Simmons on Instagram and he ended up taking it and making it his Twitter profile pic. I thought it was awesome but I was hoping he would credit me for it. It's been 3 weeks and he has never responded to me. Is there anything I could do to gain credit for my work without coming off as a bad person?

Did you give him credit for using his face?

Sure did. I just thought it was the norm to credit someone. When I see others do this, they typically credit the original creator.

You almost have a tie. He is using your artwork but you used his image (and as a public figure, his image would have more value).

It is going to be hard to get him to acknowledge credit without looking bad. You could say "please don't use my artwork without giving me credit." But, it may be better to let him use it and then try to promote your image yourself. Use social media to show your image on his twitter.

ETA: By "looking bad," I assumed that you didn't not want the guy to think you were being a dick. You aren't if you ask for credit, btw - I'm sure he wouldn't be in a TV show that didn't list him on the credits.

You tagged him. It's not like he was just perusing around and found it. I've never seen anyone cite where their avatar came from.

You're pretty good. My sketches look like something a preschooler would do.

Typically, when I've seen a public figure use a picture from an artist (that they haven't paid for) they tend to credit the original creator initially. Happens a lot on Instagram.

You need to start putting watermarks on your work.

Brosef Stalin - I would put a watermark on my stuff, but I have yet to see a watermarked piece that doesn't cheapen or make the picture look dumb. Also, I really don't mind if someone takes my stuff for their personal use, just would like a quick, "... created my new profile pic."

I'm really appreciative that he used the piece. I just would've thought he would've credited me. My coworkers thought it was hilarious that my original Instagram post has less than 20 likes, yet a man with 4.45 million followers whose tweets in the last 3 weeks have been featured in major internet blogs and news sites is using it as their profile pic.

I wouldn't expect credit considering you used his face and he's kinda doucher, though I enjoy his work

If I were you I would just get over it and move on. Create a decent watermark and put that on all of your work from here on out.

I've had dozens of my LSU Football photos used in one form or another after posting them on TD. The most famous one was LSU @ Bama 2009 (PP7 non-interception). There was an email that went around detailing all of the officiating blunders in favor of Bama. It contained about 3 or 4 of my photos used without my permission, but I didn't put a watermark, so I didn't really have a leg to stand on. No biggie.
