I took my brother's dog (large black lab) in earlier today to get a shampoo / haircut. She seemed to be fine when I brought her in but since I picked her up, she hasn't been able to walk, can barely stand for any length of time and seems very listless. They said that she had been nervous and had trouble standing while they treated her. My brother just brought her home and wants to just let her rest for a while and see how she is later. I'm telling him that I think that they did something wrong and that she needs to be treated immediately. Any ideas? TIA

ETA: Just back from the animal hospital. Won't go into details...but it didn't end well. Thanks for all of the advice.

Go to the emergency vet. No point taking any chances.

Why does a black lab need shampoo? Mine have never needed ut, and their hair is too short to cut.

The dog needs to go to the 24 hr emergency vet ASAP. If you are in Nola, Google shows several.

If it is a young dog I would be concerned. Old dog,may have over did it with jumping or moving in ways that are not normal for him.

You brought the dog to a groomer or vet? Groomers aren't supposed to give sedatives but vets sometimes do.

I always used it on my dogs. They do need a bath sometimes.

Grooming can make them more comfortable in summer depending on their coat.

It's possible she's just worn out from all the excitement. That's not uncommon.

OP, the consensus is that the dog needs to see a vet. You asked for advice, we gave it. If it was my dog, I'd already be out the door.

I thought of that but I've brought her in to the same place for this before and she was always fine when I picked her up. Usually she's very good when she's had this before but the lady told me this time that she was very nervous and had trouble standing while they were working on her.

vet is always a safe bet

could be stress related, not sure how often the dog gets groomed. But i do know unusually stressful situations can cause the dog to be extremely lethargic

I think it is somewhat more common when a dog is boarded

The majority of the board would tell you that you should have adopted a shelter pit bull.

Damn, hate to hear that it wasn't something minor.

Very sorry to hear that. I know what it's like all too well. At least you tried.

If you want to talk about it, sometimes it helps. If not, I understand.

Thanks. Let's just say that someone at that Pet Smart is going to have to do A LOT of explaining.
