looking for a cheaper watch in the $75-$100 range. What is the difference in the citizen eco-drive and citizen quartz?

My only advice is to ignore anything that Broke fella recommends. He wouldn't know a Timex from a Rolex. He's bad, really bad.

eco - drive is their version of an automatic, which means it does not have a battery. it operates from the movement of your wrist. "quartz" means battery.

An eco drive is solar powered and won't need its battery changed for much longer. Really, they are both quartz movements. It's just that the eco drive is a solar powered quartz movement. I would go with an eco drive if all else is equal.

You are a fricking retard.

Eco-drive HAS a battery which is basically solar powered.

I'll explain. Quartz just runs off of a $2 regular watch battery. Eco drive is a solar powered battery. You stick the watch in the sun and it charges the battery. Put it in a dark box and it loses power. The battery is about $15 and they can go bad. They aren't supposed to but they do.

Just keeping it on the dresser will be enough. It has to stay in a dark box for like a month before it will die on you. It's very unlikely that you will have any issues with it.

Eh. I really don't think it's quite like what you seem to be thinking. The eco drive and basic quartz both have batteries. I don't think that the rate that the batteries themselves drain will really be that if any different. It's just that with an eco drive you won't have to take the watch in as often to get a battery changed. If eco drive vs quartz is your only deciding factor then eco drive is the definite choice.

So the battery itself does have less independent life between quartz and eco? I guess that would make sense. I don't really know that much specifically about the engineering of the solar watches.

I still say that eco is the definite choice between the two though (all else being equal). Like you said, you'de still almost have to try to kill the eco drive battery by burying it in dark.

Invicta 8926 with the NH35A movement. Best $85 watch ever made. Throw it on a nato strap because the bracelet is not that great.

There are a couple of really nice sterile 5512 and 5513 style watches with ETA movements. I would take one of those over the Invicta but they can be hard to find outside of Ebay.
