I got out of the Marine Corps in 2013. Since then I've been going to school and enjoying the civilian life (a little too much), but I have an itch to put a uniform back on. I saw that I could possibly go the OCS route with the Guard since I have more than 90 credit hours and then finish up school. I'm going to talk to a recruiter tomorrow to see what my options are, and I'm wondering if anyone has taken this route before.

My major is Information Technology (Cyber Security) so I would think the Signal Corps would be the best option as far as employment, I just don't know how the Army/Guard works. Is it worth it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you ever seen drill weekends? It's not worth it bro. I just got out of the Marines after 10 years. Was a Recruiter from 11-14 and dealt with USMCR & local NG all the time.

I was at the I&I in Baton Rouge for a few years so I've seen it, I've just never experienced it first-hand. Working all week, through the weekend, and then the next week sucked.

If you did I&I I don't know why you'd even consider this. I know most guys love I&I but see first hand how fricked up it is. I mean it's not a bad thing and honestly if you don't like it just stop going. Lol. (I'm sure you already know, but if you don't, there's no "punishment" from breaking a NG/Reserve contract)

See you in Augusta if that's the route you want to take

We went after people that went UA. I think it was mainly for the gear though and the individual would just get an ad sep.

That's exactly what it was for

The USMCR unit that we recruited for would tell them in the reserve interview that if they don't want to come back just drop the gear off first.

I have a couple friends that got out of the MC and went guard. They hated it. Said it wasn't even close to the same mentality and standards with lots of shitbags. I considered it myself but ultimately decided to go back MC.

Can't argue with the OCS logic though. That is a hell of a selling point.

Going from E-5 to O-1E ain't too bad. I don't know if I could go active though unless we go to war again.

I don't know his exact TD screen-name but I think geauxtigers87 was in the Marines and is in the Guard now. I bet he would be a wealth of information for you.

If you really want to go active then why not talk to the OSA for whatever branch you really want? You're in school and get lined up for commission in an active capacity. You're potentially going to have to do this anyways if you want the officer route. Best of luck & Semper Fi!

Btw you're an Admin correct? Can you use your pull for a Military Board?

Tried it when I got out of the Navy, as others have said it's nothing like active duty and I didn't stick with it.

Buddy of mine was in the Navy and after he graduated from LA Tech, got in the Guard. He is an O-5 now. Worked out good for him.

That might be the better option. I appreciate the advice.

No problem. I'd suggest seeing OSA/Officer Recruiter first anyways. Some recruiters are slick and you can't get an "OCS Guarentee" in writing. You're smart but like I said I was a recruiter but frick 99.9% of recruiters .

I recruited for the Regular Army and I can tell you your degree is irrelevant. The degree qualifies you for OCS, how they slot you is based off need. You will get to select which branch you would like to be slotted in but based off where you finish in the class and the slots available is how you are placed.

Again, that's how the RA worked between 2006-2010 while I was recruiting. I would think the NG is tougher with fewer slots and only limited units in your area that you can be assigned.

As for Signal, there's only 1 Signal Officer in a RA Bn, plenty more in Signal BN's but I do not believe the NG has Signal BN's, I could be wrong.
