Took about 5 months. Slow kill method, vet said it is easier on them. Tested negative since a puppy, switched her to Trifexis at 3 years old from Heartgard/NexGard and next years checkup tested postive. She took it like a champ besides some occasional vomiting but shes finally heartworm free!

Congrats. Had to go through all of that with my dog. All kinds of steroids and shots. He had to stay indoors and not get overheated. He's been worm free for about 6-7 years now. Good luck.

I think it was either doxycycline or monocycline. Something with a -cycline at the end either way it worked!

What kind of symptoms did yours have?

Mine has been on Trifexis since birth and she's energetic and fine.. but I found some fleas on her last week, which Trifexis is supposed to kill. I haven't seen any more fleas, but she is still itching (either residual bites.. or maybe she's allergic to the new food I bought?)..
But I know they get heartworms from accidentally eating fleas, and I don't need Trifexis failing on that front as well.

The ONLY way animals can become infected with heartworms is through an infected mosquito. If your dog eats a flea, then they have a chance of getting tapeworms.
ALso some dogs have severe allergies against fleas. If one flea bites these allergic dogs they can have extreme itchness for up to 6 weeks from a single bite. Trifexis can only kill the fleas if they bite. It does not stop them from jumping on them.

Mine always seems to get fleas on trifexis as well. Never seemed to trust that shite, I'll probably try and switch at the next visit.

She actually didnt seem out of the ordinary at all, she just tested positive and the vet thinks they caught it pretty early. Since switching off of Trifexis though her stomach seems totally iron clad, she used to vomit pretty frequently from anything even small that might irritate her stomach.

Heart worms are tough. Godd whatever program you followed worked.

My father gave a dose of Ivermax to our golden retriever ever so often and that dog never had heart worms, fleas or ticks of any sort. Never was on any other medications. Dog lived to neatly 16 years old. Coincidence maybe but I have to think that Ivermax is what keep the parasites away.

Heartworms are only passed through mosquitoes.

Congrats. Mine had the arsenic injection 12 days ago. A few more weeks before we have the next injections.

Edit: the slow kill method didn't work for us. So that's why we did the arsenic injections
