Well, the Air Force has decided to uproot me and move me to Pope Army Air Field out in North Carolina... Eeek. So you right coast people, what's good out there? We'll be living near Raleigh because frick Fayetteville.

I've lived in only Louisiana (18+ years) and Washington (11+ years) in my 30 years, so this should be a different change.

Beautiful women with sweet accents, good BBQ, not too far from the beach, temperate weather...

I'd not mind Raleigh too much. Go in with an open mind and you'll be set.

Carolina BBQ is disgusting compared to southern style.

If you have a family, Wake Forest is a nice suburb of Raleigh. Good schools in the area, too.

Good BBQ, some eclectic college towns/campuses around. Craft beer 3 hours away in Asheville. It's not that bad at all. NC's beaches on the OBX are great too.

And what exactly is this in BBQ terms?

Carolina BBQ and Memphis make up the two primary southern styles. Carolina BBQ with vinegar is the best IYAM.

If you're going to live near Raleigh, pick Mayberry. When things get boring you can always drive up to Mount Pilot for some action.

Good luck and thank you for your service.

Most people I knew in Raleigh didnt have accents
The BBQ isnt as good as Memphis or KC, second tier IMO
The weather is bipolar as frick, kinda like South LA can be but its sucks more for your sinuses because the pollen level is way worse.

More important things about Raleigh/NC:

frickload of beer and local breweries
Proximity to beach and mountains
Proximity to great college basketball
Great place to raise a family if you're into that, with a ton of great schools around
People are pretty friendly
The roads are great and the traffic congestion isnt bad at all besides during the middle of rush hour
Pro Hockey Team
Women are easier IMO

Annoying things about Raleigh:

Northern transplants
Lack of a true home grown culture. See: Atlanta, Charlotte
High gas tax
Bandwagon Panthers Fans
Steelers Fans
Being outnumbered by opposing fans when playing a northern opponent at Hurricanes games
Lots of people smoke here due to the state's tobacco culture
People don't understand South LA culture
No Mardi Gras

Theres prob nearly (or maybe more, IDK) two dozen breweries within 30 minutes of Raleigh

Charlotte is a sweet town. Even they are taking Asheville on a run for their money with the craft beer scene.

Stop being a bitch. Pope is great, what's your AFSC that they are sending you there for though? There's not much left, large Airevac unit there.

Raleigh nightlife is pretty awesome, the women are great outside of Fayetteville with all the colleges there. Wilmington and Carolina Beach are close nice beaches. Good distance from Florida and DC that you could take off for a long weekend and be alright.

Cary is a beautiful little city outside of Raleigh. Hurricanes and NC state games are fun

Meh. I like all styles of BBQ. Your opinion and propensity toward being a miserable SOB are noted though.

Good call on Raleigh over Fayetteville. Beach 2.5 hrs away. Mountains 6 hrs depending what part of the mountains you visit. Good fishing and plenty of parks to visit.

Not so popular gems to visit is about 3 hrs from Raleigh. Lakes Keowee and Jocassee in SC. Kewoee is less populated, but damn fine. And has a fine arse golf course there too.

Good boating, fishing, scuba diving, and swimming at both lakes.

Raleigh is beautiful. Your 2 hours from Emerald Isle beach, 5 hours from mountains, 3 from Charlotte. Hockey. You'll love it there. I was camp lejeune.

Pleasures mine.

Thanks for the replies fellas... We looked into Raleigh because of the schools, we have a 5 year old.

I am definitely looking forward to the food and being back to southern hospitality. Also, to watch the Saints at least once of twice a year.

With all I could find on North Carolina its an outdoorsman place which is perfect because we hate being inside. Anyone snowboard? If so, how are the conditions within a few hours away?

I only went once when I lived in Ralz and I went to West Virginia to Snowshoe, but thats like 5+ hours away. I think thats the place with the best tradeoff between quality and distance but idk
