We dated for 10 years before getting married. There were no major surprises.

You won’t ever really know someone until you actually live with them.

Wife and I did it. Did it with my ex fiancé, too.
I guess it’s 50/50.

You've gotta understand dating for 10 years without ever living together before getting married is an outlier and your situation is not comparable to most. Whether it's right or wrong, there's a societal expectation that the decision to get married or not needs to be explored after a year or two of dating. Most don't have the luxury of 10 years of knowing each other before making that decision. Living together expedites that getting to know each other stage.

No, its completely normal.

1-2 years?! Thats insane unless there is an accidental pregnancy. My group of friends is every bit of 60 strong and I can’t think of anyone who got married having dated less than 4-5 years. I guess thats why none of them have got divorced

Not necessarily walking down the aisle exactly 1 year from the first date, but yeah after 1 or 2 years I think it's natural for most people to start to wonder "Is this heading towards marriage or not?" Younger folks are making decisions on taking out of state jobs, girls are wanting to pop out kids before they're too old and don't want to waste time with a guy that's not serious, etc. That's why I say most don't have the patience or luxury of a 10 year trial period.
And yes, I agree it's a little surprising to me to get married that quickly, but that's why I think it does make sense to live together prior in those situations. Living together for 6 months is probably the equivalent of a couple years dating

You truly don't know someone until you co-habitate.
I highly recommend it before an engagement. I know several couples that were very serious and had been together years, then broke up once co-habitating because they realize it wasn't a good fit.
HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Groupme ap is great. Open it throughout the day and shoot the shite. Also 1000x better than group texts when planning something

The best strategy is to never ever live with a woman. I used to have space on my bathroom sink counter. Nowadays, not so much. And prepare to ensure the toilet seat is down and clear of pube hair.

I hear ya. We started dating junior year of high school so it was never even a thought until we finished up college
