Aren't those things usually free because of the high cost to move?

Yes, so if I found a house that I could essentially get for free what would be the issues that could potentially arise if I chose to try to move it? What kind of cost per mile am I looking at?

I had a 24x20 building moved from Monroe to my deer camp which is about 80 miles and that was $1850. They set it and leveled it.

I always assumed that moving houses basically shook them apart.

Sort of the same as using the same box to ship something over and over. And a box is meant to be moved. Houses arent.

Also, would think electrical would need to be upgraded, plumbing done....

Never really saw how this is a true cost saver.

Afraid the new TV shows are misleading people as to how great an idea it is.

Call Marchand House Movers in Gonzales. They travel or can tell you who in that area. Houses are moved all the time. You will need permits, escorts, route planning etc...

Depends on how far to move and the size of house but I've known quite a few that turn out very well. They are supported so moving them isn't much of a deal. Not necessarily upgraded electrical or plumbing but certainly you have to reinstall.

I have a cousin that moved an old two story house across highway 1 in Baton Rouge. It was around $17,000 to move the house and another $19,000 to raise the power lines.

The house was over 60 years old but it turned out fine. Like some people said he had to re-do plumbing and electrical.

Depends on the age of the home obviously. Just have to upgrade most to meet current code. At least when it comes to the meter and panel.

We moved one a few years ago. It was over 20 x 30 cottage and my husband did it himself with a few buddies. He raised it, put it up on a heavy flatbed trailer, moved it, towed it home down our long treacherous driveway , set it down and within 2 days we had the elec and water hooked up and were happily living it in with no cracks or any damage from the move.

Did not have to deal with permits down our rural highway, we just snuck it down the road with friends/family to help and watch the event.

Pretty cool actually.

I once moved a 2 story from Alexandria to DeRidder. The moving cost was $9200 but I had to also pay my workers to disassemble and reassemble the top floor. It was just a shell someone blacked in so there was no sheetrock, plumbing, electrical, etc. This was 15 years ago.

A more local move with a single story is in the $5K range as I have done a few of those as well.

ETA: That cost could also rise quickly and drastically depending on your situation.

It really depends on the size of the house and how far/where you want to go. For example, are there power lines/trees to navigate that will the in the way.

I know of one house being moved. It was a 2200 sq ft 2 story on pier/beam. It was moved about 700 yards and cost a little over 40,000. That included labor, permits, and getting it set up on the new pier and beam foundation.

Yes, I do. Cost for us was approximately $31K. Originally quoted $35K. House was approximately 1400 sq. ft. living area.

Total drive was approximately 40 miles.

Lots involved including permits, plans, disassemble, reassemble, labor, foundation, etc.

My old office was once the bank on the corner of Jefferson and Bluebonnet that was moved couple miles down to Airline. I remember they had to cut the power to several businesses along the route as the building passed then reconnect after it passed. That was rather expensive from what I understand.
