having a major port city to the Caribbean

Eh, let’s not act like the port of Charleston wasn’t also a Caribbean port. City was founded by planters from Barbados. The only place in the world you also see the “Charleston Single” houses is in fact Barbados. Goods from the Bahamas and the western Caribbean sought out Charleston first for any goods going up and down the coast. The Geechee/Gullah accent is considered a Caribbean creole. Hell, we even had a much larger history of pirates Blackbeard famously held the city captive for a week until the city rowed out a boat full of syphilis medicine. Pirate Steed Bonnet was hung and his head put on a spike at the Battery as a warning to future pirates.

Charleston and the rest of the lowcountry plantations were pumping out more rice, indigo, and cotton than any other states combined up until just before the war. Take a look on google maps at the ACE Basin and you can still see the checkerboard cuts in the marshes from the old rice locks on the plantations, of which most were burned by the yanks. Also, the first shot was not fired by a Louisianan. It was fired by Citadel cadets who may or may have not been under the direction of Gen Beauregard.
