My father a 28 year Army vet with three tours in Viet Nam in the infantry was recently given less than a year to live and I want to have one made of his time of service, I also want to do one of my time in the Navy.

This is the man is whom I measure myself against and always come up wanting! I am going to spend time with him going over his medals and awards this weekend and am wondering if anyone has any recommendations on websites that do a good job with this.

I am looking for something along the lines of this.

You can buy them at most places that sell frames like Michael's or Hobby Lobby.

They have a really nice example at Michael's with a double green mat inside with the metals.

I would like to have them put it together if possible, if not I can do it myself.

My father did one for himself and his father. My uncle has his silver and bronze star but my dad has the ribbons and his general stars. It looks good. The middle of it is s picture of my paw paw over seas in the middle of some shite. Those were real men.

You could probably do it yourself. Materials are easy to find and it would probably be pretty fulfilling to do it for your dad.

I'm guessing I will have to do this, a lot of his medals are not available to the public and I will not send his to someone I don't know.

Never ordered one from a website, but in my experience ones with a folded triangle American and/or service flag in the corner look the best.

I had mine built through rack builder.com because I am to lazy to do it myself. If he was a Infantryman then I am sure he is proud of his CIB so make sure it is displayed with honor.

This is the one my mother made for me with my grandfather's WWII medals. I like how she incorporated the dog tags. I bought some WWII era army chevrons and his division patches, plus the European campaign medals that I'm going to add to it.

Wife had mine done last year it's pretty sweet. It has the American Flag folded in one corner and the Marine Corps Flag folded in the other corner. Then it has my anodized medal racks with my ribbons above that in the center. I was a recruiter so going around those are anodized benefit tags that she had special ordered with a few of my special challenge coined embedded. Wish I knew how to post pictures on here it's very nice.

Go to any military exchange or you can probably find them online for pretty cheap.

Good luck and thank him for his service

If he earned them, he's not "the public". If he's still alive, the DoD will replace ALL of them for free. If he's passed, the branch(es) of service in which he served has (have) particular protocols for replacement medals. Usually there's a charge for replacement to survivors.

They will replace a Congressional Medal of Honor. You'll be able to assemble all of his awards and commendations. Veterans and their families have the right to assemble awards properly earned by service men & women.

He has them, I am just not sending them to someone I don't know.

His highest is the Legion of Merit.

Here he is a long time before he retired, wearing his BCDs (birth control devices.)

Have him request replacements and send those replacements to the craftsmen.

Or do it yourself with the originals.

Tell him thanks for his service. I've got a Bataan survivor amongst my in-laws (Marine!). I tell him "Thanks" everytime I see him.

Sorry for all the posts but this is the man that I look up to the most.

I think I will do it myself, and thank your survivor for me also~

Found a polaroid I took of his uniform, he only wore his top cabbage. The CIB was always there as mentioned before.

My old Gunny made mine. I'm thinking about getting into making these things as well. I'm surrounded by Army frickers.
