Say what you will, our education system is excellent at discouraging kids from pursuing a trade. I asked a PhD from South Korea why he chose to pursue a PhD. His basic answer was "I did well on all the tests to keep advancing my education". Not a bad approach, because:

Just finished rebuilding my house…

My electrician is charging $150 an hour, that’s more than I make and he’s “on his tools.” Is that supposed to be looked down on? If you’re skilled and can communicate and deliver an invoice, people will throw money at you. Just gotta go get it!

is an American treasure.

Cannot be said enough. I met him through some USO tour stuff he did when I was active duty which was when Dirty Jobs was a rather large show. As others have stated he’s just legitimately genuine.

Hard to believe he used to be a host on QVC.

This is possibly the dumbest thing I have read on this board this week.

Since I posted that I only listened to about 20 mins of the episode, I have listened to more of it. He gives the number of unemployed people not actively searching for a job. He then gave the number of hours these people spend in front of a screen (which is based on some survey he mentioned). I forget the number but I want to say it is something like 5-7 million people who.. I assume do nothing but play video games all day.

If all of those people got out and become plumbers, electricians, mechanical (A/C units), wielders, pipe designers... Even contractors or truck drivers, etc, etc that would allow some of them to start their own business, it would allow companies to be able to take on more projects (some that would allow some companies to expand and eventually make more money and create more jobs).

Is that tattoo comment you saying you look down on people who do jobs you probably have no idea how to do? I bet you live in a cookie cutter house built by a contractor who built it as cheap as possible in which you overpaid for. There was also a plumber, electrician and a mechanical guy who installed the AC unit who are probably all laughing at you because they know how much it cost to build the house and can't believe you actually paid the amount you did for it.
