Nashville is definitely less hood than most Southern cities but there are still some areas to be avoided. It's still the safest Southern big city though.

I didn't say there weren't, but being from Baton Rouge and spending much of my life in New Orleans, I like to chuckle at my friends from Nashville that are absolutely terrified of certain areas of this city.

If they had a "hood world war", Nashville would be France.

Jacksonville, FL has a lower crime rate than Nashville according to 2013 FBI stats.

Maybe Nashville does a good job keeping their hood out of sight.

Yeah, you just have to visit to understand. Nashville proper includes areas that really aren't part of Nashville if you live here.

My friends, after staying several days with me, always say "I haven't seen a single black person" or "I've seen 3 black people". Its bizarre. And I bring them all over town.

ETA:

I'm no racist, its just a weird demographic to experience in the South.

Jacksonville is in a worse predicament. The City and Duval county merged in 1968. This helps and hurts in different ways.

Care to expound? I'm bored at work and wouldn't mind learning about a new city

Maybe you didn't know:

The City of Jacksonville burned to the ground basically in 1901. It's the third largest urban fire behind Chicago and San Fran. That why we don't have an "old" section of downtown. Most of the buildings were wood because Jax wasn't a wealthy city at that time.

There's a link (I'll try to find it) with some details but the short version is this.

Jacksonville was broken. The city smelled. The river was polluted. The schools were failing. The infrastructure was crumbling. They needed money.

The City convinced the county to merge to increase the tax base. It worked. Jacksonville is better off in the long run and is fairly healthy and growing at a sustainable rate.

One problem that wasn't fixed was the schools. Most HSs here are Fs. You can't move to another part of the county to avoid a certain school district because it's all one school district. The choices are dealing with F HSs, private school or move to another county. That sucks.

The good outweighs the bad I suppose.

1 cop surrounded and attacked by dozens of thugs and he didn't feel in enough fear for his life to pull his side arm. Yet we have hundreds of cop shooting cases where the cop is in fear for his life facing only one criminal. Hmmmmm

Cop should have used his baton, spray, or taser to subdue both of them

Honestly in that situation, pulling a pistol was probably the worst idea.

If he pulls it and the guys he is fighting with also grabs it, now he is in a really bad situation. If the others jump in the help get the pistol also, the officer will lose.

Nobody wants to take a beating but pulling a pistol while being attacked by that many folks is better as a last possible option.

While he was rolling on the ground his firearm was exposed and vulnerable to any one of those innocent bystanders grabbing it. He was lucky.

This time not pulling it worked out. I can see why cops pull their guns often responding to calls in certain neighborhoods.

By the way, I think that might have been a proper instance for the officer to pull out his weapon.

No, because then Tangerines dumbass would be posting some scrubbed up link/narrative combo bashing all cops.

How so? Cops have shot unarmed people, naked people, people running away, people entering a stairwell, etc that haven't even touched them, yet THIS officer was in a physical, 1-v-4 engagement and DIDN'T shoot anybody. It's a valid question. To me it's no different from when four or five cops have someone down who's not resisting and they're still kicking, punching, tasing, etc. Basically he paid for the bad acts of other cops.

The first time I went to Austin (c. 2003) I counted all the black people I saw.

After 3 or 4 days I was up to around 15.

I remember telling a guy (born and raised in S. LA) about a relative of mine, who knew someone from Wyoming. This Wyomingite was talking about there being no black people in the entire county where he lived, but that he had heard rumors there was a black family in the next county.
