Friends daughter( no pics) is moving to Memphis for dental school. He is going up there for a few days to scout for condo. Any info on decent places to look would be great. Good restraunts and watering holes also. Thnks.

Mud island area. Also, very nice set of condos across from the ball park downtown. Dark red brick (can't remember the name). Secure parking and entrance

I would look at Mud Island. I believe there are some gated/controlled access places out there. Downtown Memphis should be fun for a single youngster. Just stay away from Rebel and the other Memphis degenerates.

Downtown and mud island are actually not bad...the biggest drawback is the lack of a decent grocery store in the area. You have to drive to midtown for Kroger, which is not a bad place to find a house or condo.

If you want a safe investment, go with established neighborhoods in East Memphis or in Germantown or Collierville. Most of the FedEx money is in that area, and that's where most of the nicer housing and restaurants are. The area between Wolf River/Union and Poplar is actually the hot spot between mid town all the way to the east side of the county towards Piperton. Avoid being in Parkway Village, south Memphis, north Memphis, Raleigh, Hickory Ridge, and Orange Mound.

For some meal ideas......A&J's Catfish Cabin on Knight Arnold is pretty awesome for lunch, but you don't want to be in that neighborhood after dark. Second Line on Monroe/Cooper is amazing (I miss that place the most).

Most of the Memphis BBQ flavors are too sweet for me, but I think Germantown Commisary is the best overall followed by Central BBQ. If you like baby-back ribs in particular, the Corky's on Poplar is pretty good. Rendevous is for tourists.

Las Delicious had great tiny tacos if you like Mexican (avoid Frida's and El Porton....they are horrible). There isn't a good tex-mex place in the area at all unfortunately

In the 4 years I was there, Overton Square in midtown went from being completely dead to a pretty nice entertainment district. Cooper/Young is also neat and a little more hipster. Flying Saucer is decent. Beale Street is worth seeing as well.

I graduated from the Health Science Center. They used to have a limited amount of student housing. Mud Island is ok, but pricey for what you get. She should go tour the dental school , pharmacy building, and general education buildings. They always had bulletin boards with roommate wanted ads and housing for rent. I'm still in academia and we have a FB page set up just for housing that is private to only our students. Someone there should be able to help with this process (2-4 yr students). I lived in Cordova near Germantown Parkway (area with all the amenities). Takes 35-45 minutes via Sam Cooper Blvd to Union Ave. depending on traffic. Bosco's in Overton Sqaure is where all the UT and St. Jude faculty would gather for drinks. They brew their own beer and the food is good. Huey's is also pretty good in addition to all the other mentioned in the thread.

Midtown pretty much runs from Overton Square to the HSC. Downtown is most parts beyond the HSC. I left a little over 10 yrs ago, but nice downtown apartments were expensive. St. Jude was flexing muscle at the time and having some run down areas refurbished. I'm not sure what has been built on that side now. Midtown used to be more of a hipster trendy area. There are some nasty apartments right near campus where a good majority of the foreign grad students lived. The area by the zoo and museum is an older affluent area. Check for rentals in that area (part of Overton Park/midtown).
