I actually know that guy's cousin pretty well. The guy who got laid out by O'Neal is a (very rich) Christian Syrian guy from the Detroit suburbs. He had front court season tickets and got banned from Pistons games for life.

If you watch it, he was actually originally going out to get his drunk idiot friend (who had a bunch of priors) who had just confronted Artest (and Artest tried to deck the friend). He made the fatal mistake of inserting himself in that situation and laid his hands on Artest, and O'Neal just decked him. His doctor later told him that had O'Neal landed an inch higher or inch lower, he would have been dead.

You deserve whatever you get when you step into a situation like that, and I understand O'Neal's survival mentality at that point. It's actually a little amazing that no one got seriously hurt or even killed.
