My transmission fluid leaked out of my car because of leak in my radiator. I fixed the radiator and put new fluid in (Mercon I believe) and now it starts to slip whenever I'm in 1st or 2nd gear. 08 Lincoln MKZ. Any insight? The last thing I need right now is a new transmission in Lincoln.

Add something to your title of the thread to describe it better or it'll get anchored.

I'm not sure to be honest. I checked the stick and it showed that it had some in there. It was working fine until I put new fluid in it. After 1st and 2nd it shifts properly.

Proper fluid and level IS a big deal. Since you really don't know what you're doing, you should bring it to a trusted mechanic. I use AGCO. You can go to their website and do some reading. Good luck. LINK

Well there is different ways to check trans fluid... I would assume that with your car you need to let it idle for about 5 mins and then pull dipstick out while car is running and see where level is at... Its not like the oil dipstick... I say you are either low on fluid or you overfilled it[which is BAD]..............

there should be a little checkered area on the stick...fluid level should be in that area with the engine running...

How so? Are we talking taking the transmission apart or rebuilding it?

The 1st thing you do is check level while car is running and see where level is... As other poster said there is a checkerboard area on dipstick. Pull it out wipe it clean and re-check... As far as overfill you just need to drain out enough fluid to proper level........

If you don't even know how to check your T fluid, you're better off just bringing it to a professional.

There really isn't a indicator on the stick. But you're right.

Often when the transmission cooler busts you get water in the transmission, which starts slippage quickly followed by a quick death.

so, there is no indicator of any kind on the stick?...usually some two little dimples, lines or something like that to show you where the level should be...

Who connected these 2 things for you?

If the level is good and it still slips it may have gotten hot and lost clutch. You dont need a new transmission you may need to get it rebuilt.

Also the solenoid pack may be malfunctioning as well due to heat. If the pan is clean and it has a solenoid code try that first.

Some car manufacturers use the radiator to also cool the transmission fluid.

Nissan had a class action suit filed against them due to a similar problem. Under the proposed Nissan radiator class action settlement, Nissan will fully reimburse all current and former owners or lessees of a 2005-2010 Nissan Pathfinder, Xterra or Frontier vehicle that paid to fix the radiator or other damages caused by the defect within eight years or 80,000 miles.

It sounds to me like radiator fluid may have gotten mixed into your transmission fluid, which will ruin your transmission. The transmission cooler is actually part of the radiator in these models--so that could be it.

This was a common occurrence when I researched for my old 4Runner--"pink milkshake" syndrome.
