MD Anderson Cancer Center and LA

It seems like every few years I see a friend from B.R. is in Houston treating cancer at MD Anderson. What do you think of starting an informal network of LA expats in Houston that provide support to LA folks and their families that are here temporarily for chemo etc. Thoughts? How would something like this look It was kind of inspired by the Cajun Navy I guess. Thanks in advance

Good for you TT for thinking of that! I’ve been there three times and may need to go again. Extended stays there can be hard on everyone. Hoping you come up with a network of Tiger helpers.

I don’t know how to go about that, but do know it would help lots of people. I can think of a a hand full in past few years that have been there for treatment. Currently a co-worker is having to rent an apartment and live over there during treatments. Almost for got to add, CANCER SUCKS!

Form the group. Get a volunteer list. Appoint a few people as contact people for families in need. Build your organization as a non profit. Great idea.

My brother was treated at MD Anderson a few years back. There is a group called Dan’s House of Hope that is similar to what you described except it’s not Louisiana-centric. But may be worth checking out for ideas.

The president of the Houston alumni chapter is a director at MD Anderson. Might be a good place to start. There are several LSU alumni in leadership positions at MDACC.

M.D. Anderson's complex used to have several floors of apartments for short term rentals for patients there. There was also a grocery store & a post office, all in house. It should not be that hard to set up some sort of support system. I know various members of clergy are regulars there as well.

I am here now! MD Anderson’s Social Workers gave me a ton of free housing options. Tough to get in, but not impossible.
I was in a recovery room Tuesday next to someone with a 318 number and yesterday in an infusion room next to someone from Lafayette. Louisiana folks come here in droves…as they should!
There are a ton of resources available to patients from Louisiana, but there is no centralized location. It would be a heavy lift to create all new avenues of help for La folks. Maybe a website or a hub of information where folks can communicate needs or available resources? I bet tapping those in MDA admin, as suggested by others, would be a great start.
Transportation, runners for small things (I needed seran wrap to cover a picc line while showering), housing, financial assistance, or just a friend. All good stuff TT. Let me know how I can help!

There are a lot of programs. Guys with money and free time will donate their plane and time to fly people back and forth from different areas to Houston free of charge. Often will offer to let you stay with them too.

the easiest way to do this start a FB page, ask chicken if you can post it here and use FB itself to invite people...link/share to other Houston centric LSU /LA pages

Well MD Anderson is arguably one of the top Cancer centers in the Country, or at least between NYC and LA, I'm sure people from all over the heartland go there. Not a bad idea though. I've heard of a few people with planes (small hobby planes/little company planes) that are part of a program that fly people to and from Houston for their treatment at MD Anderson. I think that is a program in Louisiana atleast, sort of like the people that fly organs around the state/region for hospitals.
