'Last Tango in Paris' rape scene was not consensual, director Bernardo Bertolucci admits
“I didn’t want Maria to act her humiliation, her rage,” he said. “I wanted Maria to feel, not to act, the rage and humiliation. Then she hated me for her whole life.”

I am very wtf right now. So there is a legit rape scene in this movie? And this is a popular movie? I feel like I must be confused about what specifically happened. Like did she think it was just a sex scene, and then he forced the butter into her or something?

Last Tango of Paris has been under scrutiny for many years. However, the blame lies mostly with Bertolucci who many felt took advantage of the young actress by instructing her to engage in such acts.

Both Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider admitted that they felt raped by Last Tango in Paris (1972) and refused to speak with director Bernardo Bertolucci ever again.
Here is a trivia from the IMDB page. I'm not sure what any of this means.

What is seriously creepy is the director is like "yeah she didn't like that....don't regret it at all!! Got to get that good shot!"

The fricking had damned little plot or social value back in 74. I watch a bit of it on HBO a couple of years ago and didn't see anything to change my mind. If anything, it was more repulsive. Watching Marlon Brando run around nude was a major turn-off.

Just looked up the scene on pornhub. Yep that's rape

It's pretty gross that the scene is on porn hub

Well, that completely changes my opinion of those two.

I hadn't heard of it before. I was just reading some of the stuff on IMDB about it. Seems like it was very controversial. Supposedly inspired by a fantasy that Bertolucci had about meeting a beautiful woman and having a sexual relationship with her without even knowing her name. Was apparently originally intended to be about a homosexual relationship between two men. Schneider gave interviews after it was released about having sex with 50 men and 70 women and doing a bunch of different drugs. It was banned in several countries for years.
This whole movie is just a barrel of what the frick.

Wait, was she actually raped or was it that she didn't consent to the rape-acting?
Eta: there wasn't actual intercourse/rape but she didn't know about or consent to the rape-acting.

Sounds like Marlon Brando was told it was a rape scene and she wasn't. So when she was resisting he thought it was just part of the script.
