Found out a couple of hours ago it wasn't my son that was killed. He's on the 15th MEU that is in Hawaii and we have been on pins and needles for a couple of days. Prayers go out to Lance Cpl. Joshua E. Barron and his family. 20 other Marines injured though. Still don't know if My boy is one of them.

Any Former Military like to comment on how long they shut down communications after an incident like this? Thanks

Usually until all PNOK(s) for injured or killed have been notified.

also If you haven't had anyone knocking on your door or Daughter-in-law's door, I think you are OK.

I think it's crazy that it's been 2 days and you still don't know

It really depends on how long it takes to notify the next of kin of all killed or injured. Unless you're away from home, the families generally know within 24-48 hrs.

none at all. I went by the Marine recruiter's office here and they said that the Marines are in "River city" which he explained as all communications in or out are cut off.

They hold it as long as they can until the story breaks - 24 to 48 hours is fairly common. Things start leaking out, but at least that give them time to brief everyone on what can/cannot be said, and what should/shouldn't be said.

Good news is - highly likely to have contacted you if it was life-threatening. Not dispositive, but no news is good news at this point.

Fingers crossed and prayers sent. I lost a childhood acquaintance, with whom I also served with as adults, on the helicopter that went down in the Santa Rosa Sound back in March. I can't imagine if it was family.

ETA: FTR, that platform has never been considered the safest flying machine in the inventory.

I wrote a research paper on this aircraft. Good to hear things are alright for you, but that thing is seemingly a death trap.

When did you write that? I'm under the impression that they've fixed most of the issues.

I read that if they tried to drop too fast while in heli mode, that the blades pushed the air from under the the aircraft and caused a vacuum that would cause it to REALLY drop fast. I'm no pilot, so....

Was a few years ago.... And by few I mean, ya know, a while ago

Seemed like the biggest issue once they got the mechanical bugs work out is the pilot(s). Steep learning curve.
