Orcas have sunk 3 boats in Europe and appear to be teaching others to do the same. But why?

Scientists think a traumatized orca initiated the assault on boats after a "critical moment of agony" and that the behavior is spreading among the population through social learning.

Orcas have attacked and sunk a third boat off the Iberian coast of Europe, and experts now believe the behavior is being copied by the rest of the population.

...Reports of aggressive encounters with orcas off the Iberian coast began in May 2020 and are becoming more frequent, according to a study published June 2022 in the journal Marine Mammal Science (opens in new tab). Assaults seem to be mainly directed at sailing boats and follow a clear pattern, with orcas approaching from the stern to strike the rudder, then losing interest once they have successfully stopped the boat.

"The reports of interactions have been continuous since 2020 in places where orcas are found, either in Galicia or in the Strait," said co-author Alfredo López Fernandez (opens in new tab), a biologist at the University of Aveiro in Portugal and representative of the Grupo de Trabajo Orca Atlántica, or Atlantic Orca Working Group.

Didn't one of the later Jaws sequels have the shark on a revenge tour?

Maybe they're pissed the meddlesome "animal rights activists" shut down the possibility for them becoming big stars in places like Sea World.

They’re going to construct crude breathing apparatus using kelp which will allow them to come on shore temporarily. Not for weeks or even days at a time, but maybe hours. We could be in trouble.

There was a movie back in the 1970’s aptly titled “Orca” about a killer whale seeking vengeance on the humans who killed his mate and unborn calf. According to the movie, killer whales are capable of many of the same emotions that humans have, one of them being the desire for revenge. I have no clue if that’s true or not, but it certainly makes you go hmmm.

it was a ripoff of Jaws at the time but i remember seeing it when i was growing up in the 90s. i was telling my gf about it like 2 days ago cause we were discussing monster movies. i brought up Orca and The Beast with the giant squid

i feel like when i saw it as a kid they played it back to back with the movie about piranhas getting into the water system.

To be fair, most people aren't even smart enough to know they aren't whales.

Their name roughly translates, properly, to "Whale Killer"

They will ally with the dolphins.

I suggest we make our peace with the sperm whales and narwhals

Orcas are extremely smart, but they are assholes. They’re really just fricking around with these boats for fun. If they really wanted they could just capsize the boat and eat the people, but they don’t because that isn’t their intention.
