What I want to know is if the sentence has anything to do with the racial slur or was it just the assault? Is it illegal to use racial slurs? This is Murica!

1) It was a plea deal.
2) From all indications, his use of the slur had nothing to do with anything.

The dude's son was dying (he's dead now) and the dude apparently wasn't handling it well. Eight months is a little extreme but maybe we don't have all the details.

Not that it is any kind of excuse but the guy was drunk because he was on the way to take his son off of life support. He predictably wasn't in the best state of mind.
I am pretty sure the Judge took that into account. Can't say I haven't wanted to assault someone (the parent) after a kid starts screaming on a plane.

I would NEVER slap a child, but I have to admit that I have wanted to slap the shite out of some before that were misbehaving and the parents were doing nothing about it.
