It's how the US justified invading another nation after at the time they refused to leave forts and ports in that country. Whether you are glad the Union won the war or not looking back on it, it was not hard to see who the bad guys were (purely politically, not discounting slavery as an egregious and callous institution). The Confederate states went through the process as defined to withdraw from the Union and create their own government and country. The whitewashing of these men as traitors is a bit misguided. Is it a good thing war occurred and the US was able to expedite the overhaul of slavery? Yes, undoubtedly. Can you be a traitor for attacking a foreign country who waged an attack after you offered a treaty and followed political protocol to have them remove military from your country? Most were in support of Ukraine doing it, how are they not traitors for not allowing Russia to reabsorb them?

Almost all of Coastal New England wanted to leave the Union during the months leading up to the War of 1812 ... The British Naval blockade decimated the Atlantic seaboard economies and they were starving... When Madison asked Massachusetts to send troops they refused and threatened secession... High School and Junior High Social Studies textbooks don't touch on facts like that... Students are only taught about the burning of Washington D.C. and Francis Scott Key writing the National Anthem.
