Bruised = Watered down
The more you shake - The more the liquid comes into contact with surface area of the ice. Using a traditional Glass/Metal shaker combo even moreso since it takes the glass much longer to get cold than metal. Which is why you should always stir drinks that are majority one spirit without mixers (non-dirty martinis, sazeracs, etc...).
ETA:
Same goes for an Old Fashioned despite having a bunch of ingredients.

Hey Aspy. You enjoying this year's racing season thus far? My sister decided to skip going to the Derby for the first time in 7 years this year (She opted to spend on 6th row seats to Radiohead instead).
ETA:
FWIW - The place I've been working lately isn't an Open-until-2am spot... So I've been able to go out and socialize with IRL people more often. Get my social fix offline.
