The only Tier One public schools in Louisiana are:

1. LSU
2. Louisiana Tech

This is one A&M University and one STEM University. Both are essential if a State expects to produce a workforce that will attract modern companies.

Based on national rankings versus funding given by the state, several of these other universities are in need of being consolidated/shut-down. I would imagine in a state as conservative as Louisiana, we should be able to sell the fact "life isn't fait, not everyone gets to go to college, especially within 60 miles of their home" argument.

Schools that can be consolidated:

McNeese, Southeastern, and Nichols. Merge them into ULL to provide an alternative public university for South Louisiana, given its larger population. Not sure why we need three of these third-tier schools in South LA when we just need one alternative.

Schools that need to be shut-down due to poor performance:

1. ULM; if there are any desirable programs, you can keep them in Ruston; ULM has long been one chin-beard away from being a community college; in fact, given the economically-depressed state of the city, turn their facilities into trade school to produce more blue collar workers. Have you ever met a ULM student? Trust me, they give college a bad name

2. HBCUs: Grambling and Southern need to be shut down for a million obvious reasons. When people talk about merging them into Tech and LSU respectively, maybe certain programs, but it is a non-argument because most of these students could not be admitted unless you relax the standards. Therefore, trade school should be a more viable option.

So that leaves 3 main State Universities, LSU, Louisiana Tech, and Louisiana (or whatever we would call it with the merger; properly naming it after the state would actually make sense in this case).

All three serve a distinct purpose, which is to produce a viable workforce that will allow Louisiana to compete nationally for companies.

What a dumb idea. SLU is not a third tier school. Your suggestion disenfranchises those that cannot travel for a college education. Maybe one or two schools need to be closed down, but leaders need to get off their asses and support higher education as they did in the past.

You realize that Southeastern is almost as big as ULL? Like 16,000 vs 17,000 students.

This seems like a dumb idea to me.

There are many who can't move away to go to college.

I agree with most of your post but these politicians don't have the balls to shut any down, esp the HBCUs. Edwards is a dem, remember? HBCUs won't go anywhere (but they should, starting with SUNO). Also, Southeastern has like 15,000 students so it's fairly viable from an income standpoint, I'd imagine.

Edwards will end up jacking up sales tax before doing something as logical as shutting down a garbage school

Grambling and LA Tech consolidating into a single entity is something that's actually feasible. Southern should just downsize to one campus since SUNO is a joke with their nonexistent graduation rates

I'm fine with 3 schools but there are also tons of useless positions at those schools that needs to be gone too

This mentality right here is why Louisiana has so many of these state universities relative to its population.

College isn't high school. Everyone isn't meant to have a university in their backyards.

So college, the biggest means in our society to advance, should only be for those that have families that can afford to send them to school. The rest can be truck driver? What a load of horse shite!

Where do you live?
If your parents didn't have the funds to send you to an out of town university, would you be OK having to drive a truck the rest of your life?

If you are too poor, there are lots of grants, tops, etc. And maybe, just maybe if someone works at it they could do something crazy and earn a scholarship.

Seriously, we really need to reconsider the whole notion that every tom, dick, and harry has to go to a university. If you are pulling a 2.6 and a 19 ACT at any of our average public high schools, go join the military or do a vo-tech/community college.

When someone uses the word disenfranchises to make any point they are immeditialty disregarded as someone who can make a valid point. Thanks.
