I like to learn some stuff while I read, maybe a good biography or autobiography of someone influential, within the last 150 years...

Preferably a badass dude, not mother theresa

"The Life of Paul Allen"

He was at the forefront of the acceptance of gay culture.

A good blend of fiction and nonfiction blended into this series. You'll learn a lot about WWII.

I've been reading The Republic of Pirates. So far very interesting read on the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean.

Rebel Yell- about Stonewall Jackson. The man was a true bad arse. Look no more.

Endurance: Shackelton's Incredible Journey. It is about Earnest Shackleton's journey to the South Pole. They get stuck and he has to lead his men back with few supplies.

I've always been big on biographies. I'm currently reading joe bucks "Lucky Bastard" and it's surprisingly good. He has some great stories and adds a healthy dose of humor.

ETA: This is an autobiography

"The Whisperers" by Orlando Figes. First hand accounts of people that lived through Stalins brutal reign of terror in Russia. Kids turned in parents who made disparaging remarks about the government and many just disappeared into the prisons, torture chambers and gulags without ever being heard from again. Depressing but interesting view of what living under a cruel dictator was like.

Empire of Sin: A Story of Sex, Jazz, Murder, and the Battle for Modern New Orleans by Gary Krist. Basically a history of NOLA 1880-1920. Surprising resistance to starting Jim Crow in NOLA, Storyville, the beginning of Jazz, race riots, WW1 and the New Orleans Axe murderer. Fascinating stuff.

Both of those sound good, I'm making a list so y'all can keep em coming.

To add to it, anything about the old west that's legit, not the myths and stories that have evolved over the years, but something that actually portrays real life back then

Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" - it's a narrative of his trip to summit Everest. He was there when a lot of people died. He is a fantastic writer and somewhat of a badass himself.

Edmund Morris' "Theodore Rex" - it's a biography of Teddy Roosevelt. One of our nations foremost badasses. Great book.

Or Erik Larson's Devil in the White City - it's two nonfiction stories told in alternating chapters. The story of the 1893 World's Fair preparations and all the architectural feats that had to get done, and the story of a serial killer on the loose in Chicago at the same time. It might sound dull, but's it's pretty riveting, as nonfiction goes.

Have read Into Thin Air, great book!

Theodore Rex sounds good, he is someone I would like to know more about.

Devil In The White City sounds good as well, serial killers always interest me
