"really pick my dream occupation, it would be with NASA "

a close friend got a pete degree at lsu...
industry shut down and his job offer was pulled...
stayed at lsu and got at degree in aerospace...
went to work for nasa and now close to retiring...this was in to 1980s. boy life repeats itself...

a friends son just went to am and got a me degree then stayed for aero in rotary wing design... he now works for boeing in calif...moved into steath department so no idea what he is working on anymore...

all good schools... pick one that offers a life you want also... college is more than just a degree...

GPA--network---intern ---personality...all important

Keith Alan Gonthier

Did not know his middle name , but definitely the best professor/teacher I ever had. Tough....no doubt about it. But if you paid attention (which wasn't hard since he basically yelled the whole lecture with enthusiasm), then you have everything you need to pass. And when the whole class was struggling, he'd hold extra class hours in the evening. He changed how I approached school and that's what got me through.

It's amazing how well organized his lecture was for such difficult topics that could easily get sidetracked with questions. But he basically knew how the questions would come and was planned for it. I don't want to take his tests again, but I'd certainly voluntarily go listen to him speak on a topic.

Then you either know a bunch of retarded engineers or you work a shite ton of overtime.

He will hit a ceiling and watch as those same engineering friends continue to make more and more money while his W-2s start to look more and more the same each year.

I have an undergrad ME degree from LSU. I work in fluid hydraulics.

I had a job offer from an aerospace company, a defense contractor and a position at the NASA Michoud facility when they were building the external tanks.

An ME degree is versatile and the LSU program is competitive. I've worked with engineers from many locations, including international institutions. I have noticed no particular program that conclusively produces higher quality candidates.

Have many friends who went through the ME program at LSU and TAMU doing well for themselves. Also know some
ME guys who went to ULL, LA Tech, UT Dallas, and UH who have done well.

To summarize this whole thread:

The school that a person receives a degree from will influence their first job and their starting salary. The more experience you gain the less and less the school you attended matters. They have people that attend the best schools and suck at their job/career. They also have people that attend schools that are not known as the best and will walk circles around grads from IVY League grads.

To the OP. Pick a school that you want to go and just know that at the end of the day your work ethic and knowledge will have more to do with your success in whatever field you pick than the school you went to.

I have seen this many times in my job. Seems like half the engineering school grads these days just want to "project managers". Literally a year into being hired they are asking when they will be able to manage a project.

CM grads tend to top out very early in their careers.

Oh and working 50-60 hours just to make the same amount.

that was my assumption as well. I should of stated that I work at a private engineering firm. I realize the owner side is different and people do manage projects straight out of college.

lsu is a target school for recruiting into the oil industry for obvious reasons:pete---chem---me (facilities) ...yes i left geosciences off on purpose.... good mba program for in state or near by recruiting..

vet ....yes but any vet school... there are less vet schools in the nation than states in the union ( i think)

My daughter is in the program now. She worked an internship last semester that told her if she knew hydraulics and pneumatics she would get hired quickly in her chosen field (robotics). However, she said LSU does not have classes that are specifically for the technical side of those fields.
She also said that being in the working world (she has had various internships) the majority of almost all her classes have been from the 1000 ft. level and she recommended that all ME students intern any way they can. She is taking an extra year to graduate because of it.
She has worked for/with several different graduates from other schools and almost all said that certain jobs will use School/GPA to weed people out of the hiring process, but they all consider work experience as a key. They did not look down on LSU's program, because they had not had experience with any other LSU graduates. Outside of O&G, most LSU grads stay in the LA/TX area. She has worked in Fla and TN. Her internship in Fla was mostly with grads from Mid Western Colleges.
