I'm currently in Mandeville. I love the Northshore, but to climb the corporate ladder, I have to move. There are similar positions in my organization in St. Louis and Dallas, but I can't predict when those positions will open up or if I'd be the top candidate, as I am for the Birmingham job.

My wife and I would be making about $150k combined.

Thoughts?

TIA

It’s Birmingham.

If you move there you’ll have to divorce your wife and marry your sister

Birmingham gets a pretty bad rap when compared with the more "trendy" cities. However, I have been around there a bit and have found it to be a pretty pleasant place...like any other city of its size, you just have to seek out whatever it is that you like and organize yourself to experience it. I haven't checked, but I am betting that the cost of living in that area is a heck of a lot lower than Mandeville, so I you may come out pretty damn good!

Everyone here who doesn't live in Birmingham or has exposure to it more than 10 years ago will tell you it's shitty.

Everyone here who lives there now or visits with frequency will tell you that it's a pretty cool place to live.

Just moved here. Love it so far. Good golf courses; nice hiking trails; great places to eat; and the surrounding areas are beautiful. Within 3 hours of Atlanta and Nashville too. Downside is crime in the city and traffic.

All that being said, if there's an opening in Dallas, I would take that in a heart beat.

Easily avoidable. The only real hassle is if you're out around town at a bar or restaurant and you get bums trying to hustle you, but that happens in every city.

Lots of great suburbs in Birmingham. Moved here a little less than two years ago from Louisiana. You can actually send your kids to public schools in the good suburbs. Is a little larger than NOLA, but much more spread out. Some pretty nice places to eat and visit.

Not as much Alabama/auburn stuff as you'd expect. Annoying at times, but there's a lot more diversity of fans in BHAM to find other groups

ETA: also. You're 2-3 hours to a lot of greats in Atlanta, Nashville, etc.

Most people I know who live around Birmingham like it. Not too far from a lot of great places to visit, also.

Everytime I’ve had to go Bham/Hoover for work I’ve always enjoyed it. We’ve changed regions and no longer have a new to go there anymore.

All three kids play soccer, and I play in the over 30 league. We like to hike and canoe. I assume there are better/prettier outdoor activities than are available here in Mandeville.

Is there a soccer scene in Birmingham?

Absolutely. You have a huge amount of options in the area if that's your dig.

There's a small soccer scene. More so than what I experienced in NOLA and BR. There's a USL (2nd tier of pro soccer) team starting next year.

There's plenty of options for youth soccer regardless of where you live.

You'll live like a king making that much in Birmingham, and if you have a full set of teeth, you'll be thought of as royalty.

Birmingham sucks. That said, I'd already be packing if I lived in Mandeville and could relo to B'ham. Congrats

Whether or not OP has kids would greatly affect where he should look. There are some really great, well-to-do neighborhoods that are in not-so-great school districts. That's basically where all the young professionals live; no one wants to live in Vestavia or Hoover if they're single or without kids.
