BATON ROUGE - Immigrants across the country, including in Baton Rouge, are expected to stay home from school and work Thursday to show how critical they are to the U.S. economy and way of life.

"A Day Without Immigrants" actions are planned in cities including New Orleans, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston, Houston, Chicago and New York. The protest gained momentum on social media and by word of mouth.

It comes in response to President Donald Trump, whose administration has pledged to increase the deportation of immigrants living in the country illegally. Trump campaigned on building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, and blamed high unemployment on immigration. As president, he's called for a ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries from coming into the U.S.

Organizers expect thousands of people to participate or show solidarity with workers.

Ideal Market announced that it will be closing its doors Thursday in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge area. The company says all employees will receive a full day's wage to support the initiative.

"All Ideal Market stores will be closed in support of this effort to show the contribution that immigrant workers give to 'Making America Great!'" a statement from the company said.

Restaurants, like La Salvadorena located on Nicholson Drive, announced their closure on social media as a sign of unity and support of the day.

I dont think anyone has any problem with LEGAL immigrants. It's the illegal ones that we have a problem with...

I'm for this.

It gives ICE agents a nice list of establishments to investigate.

Fine by me! Let them lose out on the income and double up by still paying their employees.

I wonder how many of those employees have taxes taken out of their "full day's wage".

I enjoy capitalism. When you close your doors, I'll go somewhere else with my money. Pretty fricking simple.

If any business closes in my area, they won't receive any further support from me.

Everyone who misses a day of work to do this should be fired on the spot IMO. There is no first amendment protection from retaliation by private businesses.

Boss told 6 workers today to pack their bags and go (as in you're fired).

It was originally 9 but 3 quickly changed their minds

Looks like I'm not going to Ideal or salvadoreña any more. Too bad, they both have pretty good food.

Great. This list dovetails nicely with my upcoming "days without my business" campaign and makes coordination so much easier.

So these businesses are showing how important immigrants are to their business by letting all (immigrant and non-immigrant workers) off for the day and closing? Would't it be more effective to stay open and actually let the immigrant workers off? If they are truly imperative to the business it will show when customer service diminishes for the day.

Sounds about right. These businesses are closing to show that they not only support hiring illegals over Americans but that they also likely pay those people at or below minimum wage. They might as well have a sign that says "Closed because we support slave labor".
